My dad has been giving me lots of harping recently because he believes that going to UPenn for engineering is a waste of money, when I could go to a state school that ranks higher in engineering for a lower price. Also, he says that in his workplace he sees MIT graduates earning the same as state university grads. Is it really not worth it? Is there really no more benefit in graduating from UPenn, which is not known for its engineering, even though it's Ivy?

If you actually want to work as a hard core engineer, then going to Penn will give you no advantages, and would in fact, probably hurt you, compared to some of the big state schools. However if you want to keep open options of possibly doings sometihing other than engineering post gradudation (aka, consulting, banking), then Penn has definite advantages over most state schools. (Outside of maybe UCB)

That being said, I should point out that I will be going there next year as a freshmen, and thus have no direct knowledge, but this is what the consensus opionion seems to be on Penn engineering.
