Just wondering what kind of feedback parents are getting from their freshman this first week. We tried to convince our daughter to get the room refridgerator but she wanted no part. Just got off the phone and she’s asking for more granola bars. We sent her with three boxes! oh well, no freshman fifteen here. Anyway, she’s loving her professor in L&T and generally ecstatic even though she’s just beginning to make acquaintances. I guess the fretful mother instincts are kicking in. Any interesting feedback?

Rising 3rd year parent here, so no immediate feedback, sorry.

But, there is a great bakery in Red Hook - Taste Budd’s which will deliver to Bard (they deliver to the Campus Center, I believe) and you can order online - if you really want to treat her some time. They have various ‘bars’ but not granola bars. I’ve also used alice.com to send some care package type stuff - although their selection is pretty limited – but no delivery charge. (They probably have granola bars!) You’re lucky you’re hearing from your daughter at all. I don’t think we heard from my son during L&T for at least a week. But ecstatic he was…

Thanks spiritmanager, I guess I am lucky to have heard from my daughter at all. If I could pull up roots I’d open a take-out/delivery business right outside of Bard! From reading other posts it sounds like students would like more options. Do you think the remodeled cafeteria will have more options or just a new home for the same old food service operation?

Happy but hasty calls so far from our freshman. She’s loving L&T but has lots of work already and wonders how to fit in all the other available activities and socializing, too. From her brief descriptions of her L&T section and all we saw and heard on move-in day, I continue to be impressed and optimistic about Bard.

By the way, it was mentioned on move-in day that this summer’s dining hall rennovation is phase 1 – increasing seating by 300. Next summer, they said, the “eatery” area will be expanded.

D2 is a rising senior, but has pointed out that almost all the dorms have a kitchen with fridge/oven/microwave, and she has resisted all of our attempts to rent or buy her a minifridge. Second the vote for TasteBudd’s - great little place, and D says the new pie shop on the main corner in town is also a good bet.

Though she was a bit overwhelmed at the amount of reading they were required to do the second night, my daughter is loving L&T. She loves her teacher and I understand the author of the book they’re reading came to give a talk this week. Her roommate’s great and she’s met lots of people already. They are kept busy with a lot of activities, so I don’t think she’s had time to get homesick yet. I think they eat pretty well under the tent, but my daughter has a car and she’s already taken a trip into Kingston to load up on food for the dorm. So far I feel pretty good about all this!
