HP Envy 14

I don’t know whether to go for the envy or dm4t. Specs are almost the same with slight differences between the two. Any thoughts?

The envy is supposed to be the “premier” line. People on NB Review said this means it will be more durable (important for college life). It also has a MUCH better graphics card (important for games, modeling software, etc.) and pretty much the best screen on any laptop of its size, except the Sony Vaio Z (wayy expensive). It also has a better battery than the dm4t.

That said, I seriously considered both laptops. [HP Owners’ Lounge Forum](<a href=“TechnologyGuide - TechTarget”>TechnologyGuide - TechTarget) <- This forum was very helpful in answering my questions. I’d suggest you look around there a bit.

I’ve heard the dm4t has heat problems, but then so does the envy 17 (envy 14’s big brother)…so we’ll just have to wait and see. HP has a 21-day no ?s asked return policy, which I plan on using if everything isn’t perfect about it.

Yeah thanks. I’ve been scrolling through there everyday to check to see if there are any updates/reviews on the envy 14… I’m definitely leaning towards that one right now.

i really want one after i read the specs. i originally wanted a mac but they didn’t have 14 inch.

beta-fist, howd you get the discount?

From NBR (Beta_fist’s link): No heat problems reported and touchpad enhanced from previous models.

Has yours shipped yet Beta?

PABank, it’s going to be here Friday!
HOWEVER, I ordered a different one yesterday. Bing had 30% cashback on it, so I had a little fun.

Now get this. I got TWICE the ram (8 gigs vs. 4). The total cost came to $1077.29, $1196.56 with tax. That’s over $50 off the price of the other (the HDD was pointless to have that much space), and I got better specs. Oh, and I still called up to get the $90 refund for W7Pro, so really $150 difference. I’m sending the one that comes on Friday back (free return shipping) for a refund. The one I ordered yesterday will ship by the 23rd of July. I’m super pumped.

Actually for battery life, people are getting about 4:10 on the Envy 14. The dm4t also gets about 4 hours. So there isn’t much battery difference. The Envy 14 needs more juice for that high res screen…

Definitely buy the 80gb ssd, it’s intel’s latest I believe and will make more difference than any processor or ram upgrade. It is like night and day. No data loss if you drop it, no noise, no heat generation, less power, and 10-100x faster depending on the task. No brainer for sure.

HP doesn’t sell 80 GB SDD. I’ll probably jump the SDD ship in a year or two, once the price drops a bit.

ah, thought I saw it…yeah 160gb is a bit overkill, and will price drop a huge amount in 6 months (25nm ssds woooo).

160 GB is too little for me, that’s why I didn’t go with it.

I have my Envy 14 if anyone has any questions.

how is it? i guess since you just got it is running smoothly, but do you have any complaints or concerns so far?

i really want to get one, but want to hear other peoples opinions of it first.

I have my first one too. I like it a lot…it’s nice and cool. (I had a Dell that had heat issues). Only thing that bothers me a little bit is the keyboard…they keys are REALLY smooth.

I cant find a thing wrong with mine. The touch pad took a little time (2 days) to tweak and get used to, but everything else is exceptional.

Oy, mine is suppose to ship on the 22nd. We’ll see how that goes…

There’s a little flex in the keyboard I don’t appreciate. The track pad is odd but I used the properties menu to change it to my liking. I wish they hadn’t wasted so much real estate with the screen - there is a very thick black frame around the screen.

Other than that, I love it. The island keyboard bothered me at first, but I actually kind of like it. The screen is beautiful. I know there were some complaints about the battery life but it’s great so far. Even with the screen on full brightness I was getting about two hours - not great, but my 2008 Compaq barely got an hour.

It runs beautifully, though comes with a lot of bloatware. Takes about 35 seconds to start up and almost no time to shut down.

I know that sounds really negative, but I honestly had to stretch to think of the things I didn’t like about it. I could list all the great things (screen resolution, pattern on case, etc.), but that would be less instructive.

^Regarding the bloatware, the NBR forums has instructions and help doing a clean install. I’d suggest doing that.

I have my envy 14 and let me give me a mini review

 1. the biggest issue is the whining noise coming out from the CPU. Apparently, from notebookreview forums, only a handful amount of people has this issue and I probably can get this fixed through a RMA.
 2. Strangely enough, I don’t have any keyboard flex unless I press the keys very hard.
 3. Yep, it did come with alot of bloatware (HP Media) but I reinstalled W7 and it’s good as my custom built rig
 4. the screen is just absolutely gorgeous… it’s a glossy screen and it’s VERY bright and personally, it kinda hurt my eyes the first time I used it
 5. I have core i5 with a HDD@7200rpm and the battery life is about 4 hours, running in intel GMA. I’m very pleased. Most laptops I seen get about 1.5-2.5 hours.
 6. Trackpad was a bit annoying to use at first, but now I love it. Just gotta learn how to use it. However, I hate its rough texture and it’s not as smooth as other trackpads.
 7. the chassis is amazing… everything is aluminum on the outside.

Get this laptop :D
