HP Envy 17-1011NR for an Engineering Student

Thinking of getting an HP Envy 17-1011NR from Amazon.com as a desktop replacement with occasional portability (if needed in class). I'm getting a backpack that will hold it, if necessary. Honestly, I think the price on Amazon is amazing for all the bells and whistles this thing comes with. I could get the 1010NR, but for the extra $200, you get an I7, 8gb memory instead of 6, and a full hd monitor. I'll be loading Matlab on it at the very least and expect it to last 4 years. This comp will be used to play a game or two when relaxing. Does anyone have it out there, or have any comments on it? I've seen the occasional production problem being repored with it, but I'll just RMA it, if I get a lemon.

Why don;t you just order from HP directly. If you create an account that’s linked to a .edu address, you get 10% off your purchase including any instant rebates that HP likes to dole out.

Try getting that price from the HP site even with the 10% discount…Let me know how you make out.

I configured the exact same Envy 17. Price came out to be $1749.99. With the student discount of 10% that drops it to $1575. Correct me if I’m wrong.

This is the Amazon config:
http://www.amazon.com/HP-ENVY-17-1011NR-17-3-Inch-Laptop/dp/B003L780XS

Note sure if this was what you were looking up but it’s the model you said you were thinking of getting.

Make absolutely sure (especially if you want it to last 4 years) that it has adequate cooling. One of the big problems with desktop replacements is that it’s a lot harder to cool a laptop, so stuff overheats. My problem with laptops that big is portability (i.e. they have next to none, due to weight and crappy battery life).

While it’s close Tr1p7s, you’re missing the included 9 cell battery. The hard drive consists of 2 320 gb drives, as opposed to the single 640gb from HP, and the 12 watt AC adapter. It’s close, but I do believe Amazon tops it, and students get free 2 day delivery (via the free year of Amazon Prime) and NO TAXES. That, again, I believe means Amazon has the best deal by hundreds of dollars. You need to look at the PDF on Amazon to get complete information on whats included.

@chsow: Will be getting a cooling pad with it, and I plan to switch out the sata drives for SSD when the price drops a bit.
