ALL notebooks overheat these days. If you want one that runs cool, buy a used original model clamshell iBook. Mine is always a good temperature.

Yes, I'm sure about the Toshiba vs HP debate. I know someone whose USB port just stopped working altogether on the HP. My diagnosis from her description is bad solder joints (also a problem on later model iBooks). I know another guy who has had battery life issues with his HP laptop for some time now.

Now if we're talking desktops, I recommend HP. We have several at work and none have ever had a problem--some are 2+ years old and are run almost continuously. (Toshiba doesn't make desktops, at least not in the US...not sure if they have them in Japan)

My Toshiba T1200 still works. Look up a picture of one on Google--it's quite the historical machine! I know it's about 19 years old so that is a testamony to Toshiba's quality.

One final note--here is the order I rank laptop quality in for 2005-2006-2007 models as well as what I give the manufacturing grade:

I would go with the Toshiba. I have a Compaq V2000 and am not terribly pleased with it (it was a very good deal). The build quality isn't very great and to find anything out about some of the hardware they used is near impossible. I agree that HP desktops are quality, but I will probably never by another HP laptop.

My brother's Toshiba (he took good care of it), in about 1 & 1/2 years, had to get the monitor replaced once, the hard drive replaced a couple months later, and then the motherboard went bad so Best Buy had to find a replacement and he ended up with a gateway that was cheaper, but had more ram, hard drive, and a bigger screen.

i got an hp desktop and it crashed on me recently (i mean like full on had to get the hard drive and motherbaord replaced)
first guy from customer service was very unknowledgable but the second helped a lot

A relative has a Toshiba and it had those overheating issues as well, until he undervolted it. Now it runs cooler, less noisy and he gets 10-20 more minutes from the battery.

I bought a Toshiba a few years ago an d it had a major overheating issue. Infact, my motherboard gave way in the first few months and then later, I started having overheating issues coz apparently, the thermal paste would “burn” off! The laptop coolers dont help. I tried them all.. Great laptop with a really bad cooling system! I’d recommend the Sony or the Lenovo

My family has had 4 compaq/hp desktops, 3 hp printers, and 1 hp calculator with absolutely no problems at all. I just bought a HP laptop recently and hope the quality is just as good.

Go with the Toshiba, I’ve got one and I like it a lot. My Dad had an HP laptop and wound up taking it back (and getting a Toshiba) due to a whole bunch of issues…some of the same issues a friend of mine is having with his HP laptop, unfortunately, he is stuck with his.

i have a toshiba i bought in august… one of the newest 15.4" models… i think its the satellite a215-s4767 (i just read that off a sticker on my laptop)
the screen has a funky line goin thru it now and the battery life sucks haha
it lasts about 2 hrs… i kinda wanna get the HP with the huge battery (pack?) that lasts 6 hrs…

I have had both Toshiba and HP (currently HP). I did have some overheating issues with my Toshiba, but that was probably 4 years ago. Had a hard-drive failure within a year on my HP but replaced it with a new one under warranty and no problems since. Leave it on all the time and NEVER had overheating issues.

If I had to buy another one it’d probably be a toss-up, both are decent.

My roommate has a Sony Vaio and his computer is slow as crap and it cost 3x more than my HP, not my personal choice.

P.S: Acer bought our Gateway computers recently, not sure if I would buy either right now because of the integration of the two companies.
