HS Calculus College Credit for M119?

My son will be taking Calculus CC this Fall. The course description says that the course can be used for credit toward M119 for liberal arts major at IU. Would he be able to take credit for M119 toward Kelley's requirement? Which IU department should I contact to find out the definitive answer?

Thanks

I did a bit of digging around at the IU website because the course name (Calc CC) confused me. It’s probably the name your son’s high school gives the course. In looking at the IU AP credits site and the ACP(advanced college project) sites I’m guessing this is an ACP course. AP tests give credit for M211 and M212 (calc classes that are typically considered more difficult than M119) There are ACP courses for M119, M211, and M212. In order to receive the credit for M119 one has to pay IU for the credits. D took the high school equivalent of M211 as part of her high school courses. We paid IU for the 4 credit course when she took the class. (senior year in high school) It appears on her official transcript with her grade and is counted in the same manner as any course taken on campus. I know the School of Informatics and the COAS have no problems with the course. If IU is accepting the credit for M119 I would find it hard to believe Kelley would not accept it also.

My first call would be to his high school guidance counselor to find out exactly how the course is counting towards M119. Is it an ACP course? If not, then under what program does it fall? My second call would be to a Kelley advisor and/or a University Division advisor to confirm that Kelley accepts the ACP credit. Assuming it’s an ACP course you might also call the ACP department to confirm Kelley will accept the credit.

A final note, ACP math students take the same cumulative final that IU on campus students take.

rrah,

Thank you very much. I indeed sent a e-mail to IU academic advising department. Within one hour, I got the following official answers. They even know the teacher’s name at son’s HS.

“So it’s not a replacement for M119, it is M119. Tuition cost is $86.65/credit hour or $259.95 for 3 hour course.”

They do caution that the score needs to be B or above for Kelley non-DA prospective students. And, I am very much impressed by the quick responses IU provided to someone not even an IU student.

I would hesitate to take this class in high school unless your son is good in math or unless you are sure that your son will be a direct admit to Kelley. If he gets a “C”, then he will be in trouble if he is not a direct admit. As a direct admit, however, the “C” would not hurt him except from a gpa standpoint.

Taking W131 (my son took this at his Indiana high school being accepted to IU) or a non-Icore prerequisite might be another choice if your son’s high school offers it and your son feels he would do well in it.

Maybe take any IU class that is offered that would help his gpa the most might be another thing to do, so long as it applies to Icore prerequisites or the courses required for the 27 credit hour core.

You can’t beat the tuition price for the ACP classes. I noticed too that my son’s priority date for getting residence hall parking dates from the first day of his ACP class in high school, which was ten months before he took classes at IU.

Here is a list of classes offered by high school

bthomp1 and All,

Thanks for the excellent advice. I found the following possible courses for credit.

1) ACP US history for H105/H106

This one could be a good candidate.

2) AP Psychology for P101

S registered this one.

3) ACP Lit & Composition for W131

S has reservation due to seniors’ advice. He registered the AP version. He probably has to take W131 at IU.

4) AP Econ - Not sure if this one could get credit for E201 or E202.

S registered this one. However, there may not be enough students for this course to go forward. If that is the case, I will persuade him to go for ACP US history.

5) AP US Gov for Y103 or ACP -Government/Political Science for (?)

S registered the AP version (1 semester)

6) Calculus CC for M119

S registered this one. Students really good in math will be in Cal AB/BC. Therefore, it is not too tough per seniors’ advice. Nonetheless, the course load for this plan is probably heavy enough. I am concerned about his grades if he takes all these 5.5 AP/ACP/CC courses. He will definitely spend more time on M119.

Currently, S’s GPA/SAT are above the 2010 Kelley DA criteria. He should be able to improve a little more on both at the end of this semester. I certainly hope that 2011’s criteria would not jump too much (I am predicting 3.8/1300). We can adjust the courses accordingly if something unexpected happens.

In the meantime, I will ask him to consider taking the following courses in the local IU branch based upon the discussion from this board:

Summer after HS Junior: M118

Summer after HS Senior:A201 & A202

Summer after IU freshmen:K201 & E270 (I guess that there is little chance for internship.)

Please advise if there may be other considerations.

Thanks

Taking W131 at IU is kind of a pain, so getting it out of the way would be good. Getting it out of the way with ACP or testing out of it can save a lot of effort and open up time to take other I-Core pre-reqs.
A 4 or 5 on the AP English Composition section will get exemption from W131. Also, can get exemption with 670+ SAT critical reading. 670+ SAT critical reading and 660+ SAT writing gets you the W131 exemption and 2 credit hours for W143:

This part of the writing requirement may be fulfilled in any one of the following ways:

Exemption without credit. Students scoring 670 or higher on the SAT Critical Reading test, or 32 or above on the ACT English Composition section, or 4 to 5 on the Advanced Placement English Composition section, are exempt from English composition.

Exemption with credit. Some students have an opportunity to receive College of Arts and Sciences credit. A student will be granted 2 credit hours of English W143 if the student has:
1. a score of 670 or above on the SAT Critical Reading test, or 32 or above on the ACT English Composition section, or 4 to 5 on the Advanced Placement English Composition section, plus
2. a score of 660 or higher on the SAT Writing Test, and if the student applies to the Department of English in Ballantine Hall 442. Students should also see “Special Note” under “Credit by Examination” in this bulletin.

Where is your son taking A201 and A202 in the summer. IUB, IUPUI, or some other IU campus? Kelley won’t accept financial accounting and managerial accounting from Ivy Tech on a one-for-one basis. If you son gets into Hutton Honors college, he might want to take the honors versions of A201 and A202 in Bloomington, as they are taught by excellent teachers and have other advantages vis a vis the non-honors versions.

You say ACP for US history for H105/H106. I thought the ACP would be only for one but not both. AP US history can get you credit for both with a 5 on the exam.

bthomp1,

Thanks for the detailed answers.

My S does not have the 670 in CR yet. I will see if he can bridge the gap by June. I think that Honor program would be tough for him to get in. I would be glad if he can stay focused on his course work. Our near-by city has an IU campus. He may be able to take care of W-131 if necessary.
