HS Class of 2012 Decision Thread

Hey all,

Like in previous years, let's compile a thread of admissions decisions.

Please state:
1) Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected
2) GPA
3) Test scores
4) Brief description of extra curricular activities
5) Brief description of essays

Son was accepted.

GPA - High school 3.9 uw
Running Start - 3.86 - 41 credits - heavy in math, lab science, & cse

Test Scores - 1780 (not great at standardized tests, very good at actual class tests)

Is taking Calculus 1 this quarter

Computer Science AP test - 3

Activities: Boy Scouts 9, 10, 11, 12; High School Soccer Team 10; Captain of YMCA Soccer Team 9, 10; Youth Group Leader 11, 12; Baseball Assistant Coach 10, 11; County Food Bank Volunteer 9, 10, 11, AP Computer Class Representative 10, 11,

Awards: President’s Academic Excellence Award, Vice-President’s List, Eagle Scout, Elected Order of Arrow, Most Employable Student at in High School Computer Science, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society

He has worked 20-25 hours a week since he turned 16 and has been a crew trainer. He is now in training to be a crew leader at his current job.

Where was the running start at?

South Puget Sound Community College

Also, in the thread I think people should put In State or OOS because apparently OOS will be a lot more competative this year.

mom2squirts - did your son’s my uw id status change yet? Curious about mine since I’m all the way on the East coast.
congrats!!!

No slideaway it hasn’t. I suspect they sent the letters early to circumvent some of the online hysteria. I’ve been checking like crazy. But that is only a guess.

I can’t edit my post up there so I will add his essay topics:

Being bullied at scout camp and persevering and succeeding in leadership roles in scouts.

How hosting and befriending leg. pages from all over the state and all different nationalities and backgrounds made a difference in his life and views. Also, we have a foreign exchange student and he has changed our lives as well.

Eagle scout project - Built & supervised a $10,000 wheelchair ramp for a non-profit organization

Job - he has been working since he turned 16 and has been in supervisory roles nearly as long

AP Computer Science Class Legislative Representative - he would give tours and speak to politicians on why the cse programs and other tech classes should not be cut. He was selected by his teacher.

Youth group leader & mission trip to Poland

Youth 8-10 years old assist. baseball coach

He was homeschooled until 10th grade, then he took ap classes at public school. Then off to running start where he has excelled.

So you can see that your ECs don’t have to all be school focused.

Good luck to you all! I’m rooting for you!

Accepted!

Use this format to simplify things. Can’t wait to check my mail (hopefully it’s there). Anyway, can’t wait to hear everyone’s acceptances. Remember, remove the spaces for it to work. Oh yeah, just checked, Got Accepted…yay…

I got my acceptance letter today :-)

3.8 GPA, 1870 SAT. 5 APs/4 Honors classes total. I was a peer tutor my sophomore year and a Key Club member junior year. I am a member of National Honor Society and have been a part of our newspaper staff for three years (Head Features Editor/Managing Editor). I am also a executive mentor for our freshman transitioning into high school program (which I’ve done for two years).

My personal statement was about my having to change schools my freshman year and how it has affected me and has led me to becoming the person I am today. My short response was about the cultural differences between my parents and I (my parents having been non-English speaking immigrants, whereas I have lived in the U.S. my entire life).

I am also in-state. Good luck to everyone else!

Perhaps this thread can be the discussion thread and JUST decision stats can be posted in another using the format Raamzic posted. Just to keep things nice and organized. I know that’s what other school subforums have done and it always seems to be more useful for others if it’s like that.

Just came home to the big envelope! :)

3.926 gpa, 1800 SAT, six AP classes including this year, church worship leader for four years, wrote essay about my leadership in the worship band

1) Accepted, waiting on Foster admission
2) 3.75 GPA 4 AP’s, 4 Honors
3) 2010 SAT
4) In order of personal significance-
→ Church youth group involvement/leadership
→ JSA (debate club) Held school and regional fundraising position
→ ASB (school leadership) Fundraising coordinator
→ Key Club (community service) DIDN’T count hours from church towards this
→ Work over summer, 35 hr work weeks
5) Essays-
→ 1) How I chose to give a speech in front of my school for a talent competition. Why I chose to do an inspirational speech instead of some oddball talent
→ 2) Connecting a mission trip I took to Kenya with the homeless work I’ve done in DT Seattle and especially highlighted diversity (or lack thereof, because we’re all humans with the same needs)

Additional comments
-PSAT commended scholar
-Volunteer little league baseball coach

Essays: I think I wrote one about a big decision I made in choosing high schools, which I thought was quite significant at the time (two very powerful and prestigious private schools vs. one lonely “ghetto” public school). Another essay I wrote was about a racial incident I overcame when I first begun attending the aforementioned public school. By the way, choosing the public school is the best choice I could have ever made; not that it matters to anyone else besides me.

Reflection

Strengths: Well-rounded applicant (GPA, test scores, activities, etc.), essay (diction, hooks and overall style)
Weaknesses: Essay topics could have been more heartfelt
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/denied: I think I was accepted because I had many qualifications that they looked for, and more importantly, I didn’t have many things that would have raised RED FLAGS on my application. In addition, my essays had a very urbane feeling to them; very suave I must say;)
