HS Class of 2012 Decision Thread

Decision: Waitlisted… crap

Objective:[ul]
[ *] SAT I (breakdown): 690 CR/720 W/640 M
[ *] ACT: Didn’t send
[ *] SAT II: Didn’t send
[ *] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.3
[ *] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable):
[ *] AP (place score in parenthesis): Human Geo (4), Psychology (4), Literature & Comp (5)
[ *] IB (place score in parenthesis):
[ *] Senior Year Course Load: College Algebra, College Trigonometry, AP Studio Art, AP Government, Newspaper, AP Lang & Comp, AP Biology
[ *] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): None to speak of
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[ *] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): (Editor In Chief of Newspaper), (Team Captain of Speech and Debate), Founding Member of National Art Honor Society, Peer Mentor and Tutor as part of the Link Crew Program in which I was also a Link Leader for two years, organized hygeine drive in my community to benefit a battered women’s shelter, shadowed/canvassed for local senator who is involved with public health, yeah I think that’s everything.
[ *] Job/Work Experience: Internship with top local photographer, work approximately 15 hours a week as a waitress
[ *] Volunteer/Community service: Link Crew, canvassing, volunteer for project CURE
[ *] Summer Activities: Had a damn lazy summer.
[ *] Essays: Thought they were awesome. However, they were very personal.
[ *] Teacher Recommendation: They don’t want those.
[ *] Counselor Rec: Nope, don’t care about those either.
[ *] Additional Rec: No again.
[ *] Interview: Are you kidding me?
[/ul]Other[ul]
[ *] Applied for Financial Aid?: No
[ *] Intended Major: Declared political science
[ *] State (if domestic applicant): Colorado
[ *] Country (if international applicant):
[ *] School Type: Public
[ *] Ethnicity: Caucasian
[ *] Gender: Female
[ *] Income Bracket: I am the 1%.
[ *] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None, really.
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[ *] Strengths/Weaknesses: I’m grouping these two because it could have gone either way… I thought my strengths were my essays, however they were very long and could have annoyed the adcoms. My SAT score was pretty good I thought, my GPA was low however there was a HUGE upward trend. As in 2.3 → 3.8 freshman year. I took a very rigorous courseload as well, took on a lot of leadership.
[ *] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/denied: I was a little surprised because other than my GPA without all the info behind it, my application was fairly strong. I’m out of state, so they should want my parents’ delicious out of state dollars. Definitely my GPA. My grades were pretty so-so. 3.8, 3.7, 3.6, 3.3, etc. Didn’t totally decline like that, but you know. U Wash is getting more and more competitive. I’m reading articles about valedictorians in Washington state who are getting rejected. So, I don’t feel that bad.

[] Strengths: Essays!! I slaved over them and they were very personal. My school’s rigor.
[] Weaknesses: Math scores. Math in general… seriously
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/denied:
My essays and unique situation with WA residency while living here, how I’ve had to adjust myself… rigor of school and course junior & senior year.
[/ul]General Comments:
Do the essays wholeheartedly!! They really enhanced my application and covered my math weakness… haha…
At my school, a “regular” class is very difficult, while an AP is extremely time consuming with about 3 hrs of homework per class… I had to express my shock about my school in my essays as the standards vary school by school. It’s crazy…
Hope to see some of you soon at UW :)
