What are you dreading the most about writing the essay? If you’ve already started, what has been the most frustrating part so far?
I’m dreading the fact that I know I’m going to wait till late to start.
lol dreading the procrastination that will totally ensue, but excited because I think college essays allow applicants to shine and really show colleges, “hey this is who I am off the stats paper.”
question because i have no idea. when do most people start the common app/ supplementary essays? how much time do they usually spend on each?
dreading the fact that they are valued highly and i hate writing personal essays.
I’m definitely dreading the college essays because I’m not sure where to even start?? Also, trying to make your essay unique is difficult:(( I’m planning on starting over the summer but ugh.
Not really, I enjoy writing and if your not sure where to start there are several books out that are on the topic that could de-stress you a bit. I’ve written 3+ drafts on papers, notecards, iPhone notes sections. Most likely it’ll just come to you or you already know what your going to write about you just have to focus on that one moment of time your always thinking about.
Dreading writing about something that truly speaks to who I am as I person but I know that I’m basically going to be judged for it.
Writing is not my favorite thing to do. However, I feel like I will enjoy it because the essay will give me a chance to explain who I am or life experiences. It is a very personal thing that sets you apart from grades, E.Cs, and test scores.
I enjoy writing, but the added pressure of knowing that this essay might make or break your application tenses me. So when is the ideal time one should start working on the essays? Especially when one wants to apply early? I think that the supplementary essays are available during the month of August, so is it prudent to get over with the common app essay by then?
the hardest part for me has been getting my essays “just right;” i’ve had to re start my essays several times for fear that i wasn’t writing to the fullest of my potential.
@mumbai98 i think you should start essays as soon as possible (around july/august is what i’ve seen people do), especially if you’re applying early, since i hear that essays are the part that takes up the most time
My life is boring af. #screwed
@Gatortristan same. Most essays I’ve read talk about exciting experiences, things that changed people, and whatever. I’m just a sheltered kid in high school, with no interesting personality traits, who has no social life, no friend or family drama, and sits at his computer all day when he isn’t studying. Sure I have interests, but I hate talking about them as if they are extremely important, and have “shaped who I am”, I just like certain things. And I hate talking about myself more then anything, because I can’t help worrying about seeming pretentious all the time.
Guess I’ll just have to wing it
Already wrote the common app essay even though I’m usually the poster child for procrastination. Why? After the AP test, my English teacher has us write them for a grade so that we don’t just sit and watch movies every period for a week. Nice concept.
I am not looking forward to it because I honestly have no idea where to begin - my sister died the summer before I begun my freshman year and my grades were bad that year but I’m not sure where to begin with the essay. I don’t want to make excuses but it really did affect me and my grades, you know?
I also finished mine too. I’m having a lot of people look it over even on here on CC. I did mine on the first CommonApp Essay Prompt. You know when school has taken your writing abilities when you make a 5 - paragraph essay without knowing XD
I’m actually kind of excited to write the essay. It’s a challenge, yeah, but a chance to say anything you want about yourself
I’m looking forward to it! I’m a very strong writer and don’t have the strongest stats, so the essay is kind of my moment to shine haha.
^^ Same. My GPA of 3.6 is mediocre (atleast to CC standards) so I am kinda looking forward to the personal statement when I apply to the University of California. I plan on starting around the middle of June through all the way to the middle of November. I wish the HS class of 2016 the best of luck with their essays!
I am soo excited. I know exactly what I am going to write about, and it’s my chance to say everything I want to about myself, that can’t be conveyed through numbers on paper or by the extracurriculars I’ve done. The only thing I’m worried about is the word limit… I tend to be a verbose writer :((
I’m pretty nervous about college essays! Trying to find a particular moment/event/etc that really captures who I am as a person is pretty daunting haha.
