So...how are you preparing your child for college?

(Kidding...KIDDING! Although I do have a ten year old.)

By working through the process with the first one (class of 2011)!! My second will indeed be one for the class of 2016 - he’s heard enough of college, GPAs, APs, schedule rigor and the like already!

In our district, to be on track to take Calculus Senior year, you need to take pre-AP math in 6th grade. If you take “regular”, you won’t be on track unless you take summer school. So parents really need to ramp up on at least the high school requirements when their child hits middle school. It’s amazing to be told all this at the 5th grade parents’ meeting.

Missypie, that’s similar to the situation in our school district, except they don’t tell you about it in 5th grade. Unless you’ve been through the drill with an older child, or are told by someone who has, you don’t find this out until it’s too late.

Alas, I don’t have a 2016 grad. I have a 2014 and a 2018, and so far I’m doing nothing to prepare other than getting my 2010 and 2012 kids through the process.

oh my gosh all this thread did for me was make me realize I have no idea what the “number” of the year #3 will even graduate. Whoops. Gotta figure that out.

Mine has already her university picked out! Of course that was based on all the fun her big sister is having there, but at least she has one good reason in hand. Now if she can just get in with a scholarship …

I have an 09er and a 15er  The 15er went on a week long tour of colleges in Florida in JULY (another ). After touring, she asked questions about majors and other colleges. I have already stressed the importance of reading and math and how her grades now will affect her classes next year in middle school, then how her classes and grades in middle school will affect her classes in high school, which is something that I did NOT learn with my oldest until it was too late.

missypie - what you described is what happened with us when our D was in sixth grade. She was put into an honors algebra class for 7th grade and they then gave us a sheet that described her progress all through to senior year, finishing up with Calc AP. Quite a shock to see that list at that time.

I’ve tried unsuccessfully to change this schedule for my D (wanted her to get to Calc AP by junior year). I am hoping to be a bit more proactive with my S - but having seen this before, I don’t hold out too much hope. The dept here at the high school is good, but very inflexible when it comes to accepting classes taken out of high school as credit. D completed a course in pre-calc at CTY, but no credit for this class in high school. She couldn’t even test out of pre-calc.

I have a 2017 grad who will be devastated when the 2010 grad actually grads.

The little one has been dragged to several college tours and hates them. In fact made a big enough scene at one school that the older one is too mortified to apply there now.

My 2014 had no choice but to accompany us to Son’s school for a vocal audition. She dislikes the school because they didn’t have any flowers planted at the time. I’ll have to remind her of that important requirement in 4 years.

I have a 2020! He loved his college tours - did the first round (2006 grad) in his stroller and the second round (2009 grad) on a scooter.

I have a 2013 who wants to apply to Bennington because he can’t wait to do their additional application submission of creating his own course. He started writing up his program last year. He’s planning a dual major in Asian paper folding and Chinese. I’m betting he’ll have different opionions about writing college applications and his major when the time comes in 2012 and beyond :-)

Topper alert ;)

Just did the math–my baby will be in the HS class of 2023. (My oldest was HS '06–also have an '09, '12, '14, '17, and '20).

atomom - Hats off to you! I am going crazy hear dealing with two ('11 and '16)!

2013 and 2015 here.
I can’t believe 2023! You must feel very young Atomom!

Not really-- Feeling kinda old, actually.

atomom–dingdingding–2023–you win the prize!

I clicked on this thread while counting on my fingers cause I couldn’t imagine what grade those kids are in now who will graduate in 2016!

I am glad to be getting out of this game with my 2010 kid. Ya’ll have fun, now!

I have I have a 08er (D1 freshman in college) and a 14er (D2). The 14er (D2, a current 7th grader) sets her eyes on some top colleges. But her immediate goal for next year is trying to make national Mathcounts (which may never happen).
