Ok, so how important is class rank in terms of early admission? I'm not in the top 10% but in my school that is very hard to do. Most of the poeple under the top 20% have close to straight As. I am currently 12.7% and I keep on hearing that to even be considered I should be in the top 10%.

Im african american and at my school I'm the highest ranking african american student. Theres pretty much no time for me to improve my rank, especially if I apply ED (which I hope to do).

Should I still go for it? Apply RD? Or just forget about my dream school? haha

P.S. Some brief stats to help:

SAT: (first time, no studying) 1940 (will retake in Oct. for a 2150?)
GPA: UW 3.8 W 4.2 (out of possible 4.4or5)
10 AP classes taken by end of senior year
Leadership in 4 clubs. President of 2.
Vounteer work w/ UNICEF and other organizations
Founded community volunteer group
Worked for Illinois state's unemployment office
etc. those are the main ones

So many high schools now don’t rank that Cornell “considers” rank, but not as heavily as your grades, test scores, EC’s, Leadership, and “fit” (shown through your essays) for your chosen area of study. If Cornell is your dream school & you know you can afford the cost, apply ED, you’ve got a chance.

Cornell only lists rank as “considered” because of the fact that most schools are moving away from it. However, if your school DOES rank it is most certainly as important as your grades as it does put them into context.

Could it be ? Yes. Will it? I dont think so . 12.5% is still very good for a top school and you have the minority status as well. (not in an offensive way)
