My kids HS made a change to their math program. The track the kids are currently on (mandatory) is:
Freshman - Algebra II Honors
Sophmore - AP Statistics
Junior - Pre-Calculus Honors
Senior - AP Calculus AB
They do not offer Calculus BC. I am concerned about skipping a year between Alg. II and Pre Calc to do stats. From what I understand, they school does not have enough high level math teachers to do both Calc AB and Calc BC . I would also susect they are also concerned with the non-math kids having lower grades in AP Calc showing on their college apps if they took Calc AB as a junior.
For engineering majors, how would colleges view this? The HS has an agreement with a local uni to allow kids after their sophomore year to take summer classes at half tuition so there may be something that could be done there but I am not sure it is worth while.
To take what classes?
You can’t take what is not offered, and every college knows that. No college has an expectation that an applicant have AP Calc BC.
Is geometry taught in MS or integrated elsewhere? UCs require geometry and the topics willbe needed for SAT/ACT/Subject Tests.
Seems like they are trying to slow down two grades ahead students to end up one semester ahead.
Is there a lot of inappropriate overacceleration in middle school? If not, then students in algebra 2 in 9th grade should be able to take calculus BC in one year immediately after precalculus.
In terms of engineering, the base math prerequisite is precalculus, so that the student is ready for calculus. Calculus in high school is a bonus and may give advanced placement. A few of the more selective schools want to see calculus taken in high school.
