HS senior thinking of transfer

I recently applied to 9 schools, got into 3 of them, and got waitlisted at 2 of them.

My HS GPA: (W) 3.96, (UW) I forget, but like around 3.75 probably
SAT: 1380/2090
APs: took 6. World History (3), English Lang (4), Psychology (5)
Currently taking Calc AB, English Lit, and Enviro

My ECs were pretty weak, but I think I wrote great essays when I applied.

Anyways, I got into NYU CAS, but I'm feeling discouraged about going there now. I know it's a great school, but people keep telling me that it's way overpriced, not worth it, and stuff like that. I might attend JMU or VTech (state schools).

I was waitlisted at my other state schools (UVA, William & Mary)

My overall HS GPA will be lower than what it is now 'cus of my senior grades, of course (2nd semester, that is).

I'm thinking about going to a college and transferring to a school I feel better about mentally, like UCLA or maybe a lower ivy. Will it look better if I apply from NYU? Or does it matter if I apply from VT or JMU?

What GPA in college will I need for UCLA? If I get a 4.0 or close to it at NYU will I have a chance at Columbia, Brown, or Dartmouth?

Do I stand a chance at any of these schools for sophomore transfer, or do I need to go junior?

Bump bump bump

you cant apply to ucla as a sophmore…only junior transfer applicants with at least 60 transferrable credits

bumpppppppp

Bumpppppppppp

Having a 4.0 will definitely help you at those schools you mentioned, but getting to know a professor - given your location - at Columbia will help you the most. It’s especially helpful if some important professor has taught you or something like that, and write you a decent recommendation.
I am basically in the same boat with you - I will be attending Northwestern next year, but I am not exactly happy about it. So I might be transferring to Columbia.

If you think NYU is expensive, how do you feel about 50k/yr for OOS students at the UCs? Don’t expect any FA from UCs, no matter what your financial situation is.

Don’t think of transferring yet. NYU is a great school and many people adore it, and it’s a very good name by most standards. i would say whether you plan on transferring or not try to get the best gpa you can, but it will be nearly impossible to get that at NYU with professors that pride themselves on being tough graders.

I know you didn’t get into your dream school. That really sucks. I was rejected from Columbia and some of the musical theatre programs I applied to and settled for the school that gave me free tuition and then some. However, I would have been much happier going to Syracuse or NYU at their CAS without being in the program I wanted. Simply put, don’t choose the state schools just because they’re cheaper - you will probably have a better time at NYU. And if you decide it isn’t worth it, then by all means look into transferring for your sophomore or junior year - just don’t let it worry you right now, because then you could be giving up a great opportunity for happiness at another great school.
