So, long story short, I need to score 5 points higher on the ACT math section. I did fairly well on the other sections but, as always, bombed the math.

Here are my scores:
Composite 26
English 28
Math 17 (I'm a writer >.<)
Reading 34
Science 24

I didn't study for the test since I spent the most time with the SAT and realized I did better on this test when it was too late I guess. Anyway, I need to score 4 points higher if I want to transfer to my state university as a sophomore (they hold soph applicants liable for freshman requirements, including test scores). I meet the other benchmarks, but need a 21 minimum on the math.

So, any way I can improve a little in math? I've always done poorly in math classes, and I purchased the online ACT prep to help but it just shows me all the math I don't understand without explaining it.

You should buy a review book. I recommend the Princeton review: cracking the ACT. Im using it and its really good. Also you should get the Real ACT book for the practice tests.

Like you said, I would only try improving in math now. It’s obviously your weakness, so try and target it in your studying routine.

Sparknotes goes over everything you need to know for the ACT. I suggest you read and understand everything they cover if you want to improve. With such a low score, it will be very easy to score in the mid 20’s. And as gio1126 stated, purchase a study book so you can learn how to manage your time and test what you have learned on sparknotes. In addition, study what you get wrong on the practice tests. Most likely, a similar concept will appear on the ACT.

A 5 point jump is quite a feat, especially in a section where you’re performing below-par already. But here, I have some questions for you:
- Have you taken a trigonometry course at your school?
- How many practice tests have you gone through?
- Do you have a math teacher who would be willing to go through the math problems with you/allow you to take practice tests in his/her room after school?
I am in a pre-calc course right now (by no means a high caliber math course) and English is my strength too (33 Reading, 31 Writing), but I jumped from a 24 to a 26 on my math just from taking a practice test or two in my teacher’s room and then reviewing over the mistakes. I’d say the ACT also helped me focus for my college placement tests as well.
Anyhow, I digress.
Best of luck!

I took Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 in that order. I did not take a math class my senior year. I ordered the online ACT prep so I’ll try to take a few practice tests there and see how it goes. Its just hard doing math since I’ve always been terrible at it, and this year I haven’t done any of it.
