HS Sophomore...Is Brown for me?

Hello, I’m a high school sophomore wondering if I have what it takes to get into Brown. I took the PSATs as practice in October, but I dont know what I got on them yet. Basically, I’m wondering what my chances are of being accepted…

Currently I have a 96.5 average

Extracurriculars:

Sophomore Class President
Youth Court Member
4-Year Varsity Swimmer
Student Council
National Junior Honor Society
High Honor Roll
Girls Select Barbershop Chorus
French Club
Mixed Chorus
Drama Club
Winner of Holocaust Writing Contest
6-Year Walker for SMA
Involved in theatrical productions

I know I have to start doing more community service besides my walk and I also need to get my grades up a little higher, but what other sorts of things should I start doing? Also, I just want to know truthfully if I have a shot at making it. I really want to go to Brown, but dont want to get my hopes up.

Thank you!

You seem to be on the right track, but I'd advise you to not look for activity that you should be doing, but rather find something (or 2 somethings) that you really enjoy doing and spend a lot of time and energy into it. Admissions Officers can usually see through ECs that are done just for college app purposes. I definitely think your ECs are very strong right now, just make sure your grades and test scores are really good as well, b/c without those, the ECs won't make much of a difference.

I agree with the poster above. Also, you don't want to be one of those kids who regrets their high school years because they tried so hard to please a group of old people sitting in a stuffy room reading applications (aka the adcoms). Enjoy the next 2 1/2 years, that way, when you realize the unpredictability of college applications, you won't look back and say... $(*@&@.

You really need to visit any school you're interested in - preferably with an overnight visit. You need to talk with students, attend classes, and get a feel for the school envioronment. It's not so much if you are right for Brown - but is Brown right for you.

Virtually ALL students at Brown (or any other top notch Liberal Arts college) were in the top 10% of their high school classes. That mean it's downhill for 90% of them

Brown accepts <15% of it applicants. No one has a good chance of getting in. Most applicant have extraordinary credentials. You need to have a wide array of colleges that interest you - including safety schools that may not excite you, but you would be willing to attend.

Applications are at an all time high - open spots for admissions remain stable. Something's got to give.

Thank you very much for your help everybody! I really appreciate it..I'm really going to start researching other colleges too, and don't worry, I'm still enjoying High School...I know it seems like I have a lot of EC's, but a lot of them are at different times of the year so it works out good.

As said above, you seem to be on the right track. It's too early now to determine your chances.

You should be asking yourself if brown is a good fit right now, not if you can get in.
