HS Student, CC courses, and Rescind.

Hiya. Please bear with me, I'm totally new to this site and I might be posting this thread in the wrong area, especially if it belongs in a more specific one. My apologies if this is in the wrong place.

I'm also trying not to pee my pants of anxiety at the moment, so please pardon if I sound really nervous.

I'm a senior who's been admitted to UC Berkeley. I've pulled straight A's throughout my time in HS. My school is a non-conventional- we are project-based, and our A-G projects take A LONG TIME to complete. Because I take honors courses (as we have no AP), my project load is greater. I also take EC community college courses to help me gear up for college.

I'm not doing so well in one of these CC courses. Since my A-G project load is great (including a year-long senior thesis, leader of a year-long environmental engineering project, and contributing computer-based lessons to a "made by students, for students" Calculus help website made by my Honors Calculus class), I've had a hard time with my EC CC's lately. To be honest, I didn't know how much work they would give us for our A-G at our school this semester.

I've had to withdraw from one class (College Algebra) because I had to miss a lot of it due to my A-G and would have received a FW. The other two CC courses I take (Trig and 3D Maya Animation) I am still in. My Animation teacher is nice; in case I need to miss Animation class one day, he will give me a rubric granted I ask him in advance.

My trig teacher, however, is odd. I'm not doing so well in this class because of the time I've spent with my A-G projects. When I gave him eleven days advance notice that I would miss two classes, HE FAILED TWO OF MY QUIZZES AUTOMATICALLY.

When asked why, he said it was my fault and that I'm not a good student.

He, however ALLOWS OTHER STUDENTS TO MAKE UP THEIR QUIZZES. I have a feeling he might be mad at me because I'm the only HS student in this class, or that I'm spending more time on my A-G.

Now I have a D-/F because I can't make them up.

There is NOTHING on the syllabus that says he would do this; the syllabus does state that you should notify him in advance if you will be gone and cannot help it so he can give you stuff to make-up.

He doesn't answer his email... and makes jokes about it too.

Not only this, but he punches tables and yells in class when he's angry. o_o
I am really not sure what to do about this teacher or this class. I'm studying my *** off for my exam.

I am aware of the UCs' policy on no D/F grades and maintaining a 3.0 UW.

After all that...
QUESTION: Are my chances of being rescinded great? I am writing a letter to them and trying to explain my situation. I have no idea if this will suffice.

TL;DR: I'm being screwed over in an EC CC course and I have a D-/F. My other grades (ECs and A-G) are A's and B's. WILL I BE RESCINDED. ;_;

… I forgot to mention that I take Math courses at the local CC because I want to improve in that subject. e_e I’m an ArtSci for Education person.

Can you drop the class?

HOORAY A REPONSE. <3 Thank you.

@Youdon’tsay
I can’t… it’s passed the date of dropping.
I kept it because I was doing okay at the beginning (C or better), but it tanked as my projects turned into public exhibitions (basically, our project’s final).

Do you know if UC Berkeley will allow me to retake it in the summer? I can’t find info on this, and it seems to be a rumor on this site…

Bump. D: Help and opinions are greatly appreciated!

You probably need to call UCB and explain it to them yourself.

@beatlesdisturbed
Ah, alright, thanks. :x Is my situation confusing or a cop-out at all?
I don’t see many threads concerning people dropping some ECs for their A-G courseload… especially since no one else’s is purely project-based.

This is such a specific question that I imagine only UCB adcoms can answer it.

@glassesarechic
;_; Ah, thanks.

Maybe I could simplify it a little bit… I was freaking out so badly earlier.
Does doing poorly in an EC have as much weight as doing poorly in an A-G course? I’m doing fine in everything else…

Wow your professor seems… a bit evil. Anyway, I think you should contact the adcoms (as everyone else has pointed it out). If your teacher truly has no grounds for failing you (as per department guidelines and the syllabus), you can try going over his head about the problem. You can discuss it with the department chair or an academic advisor. Because you pay money for these courses, they may be willing to help you out.

^ HS students in California get free Community College. However, I think the professor is out of line. You need to go and talk to the department chair (or higher, if he is the department chair) and tell them about these unfair grading practices. I have taken many CC courses in high school and I have never had a jealous professor (in fact, they are very supportive that I take their classes so early).

Thank you for the responses!

@Metrical
Yes, I do get these courses for free because I’m considered “K - 12”. I can only take a certain number of credits though. xD

@Acuraman93
Wow, really? This is my first year (second semester) taking CC courses… Fall semester, I had one teacher who admitted to not liking HS students in his class, but he couldn’t say anything because I scored an A.

Alright, I’ll try talking to someone higher up, as well as talking to my professor one more time, just to make sure I have everything down correctly. Thank you!

Maybe your professors have just had bad experiences with HS students? Here there are plenty of concurrently enrolled HS students, and the professors support them wholeheartedly.

@Acuraman93
That could be it… some of my other HS friends dropped out of this course because of this teacher, but I thought I was doing okay, so I didn’t.
Man, I wish I was taking courses at the CC you took them at. :/

Does anyone have any advice concerning writing a letter to UCB about a senior schedule change?

Oh wow, I didn’t know about the free CC courses. You guys are so lucky!

Perhaps you could talk to the department chair before writing your letter. If your situation changes, then you won’t need to contact UCB (unless they’re going to find out about the grade soon).
Sorry if I am a bit uniformed when it comes to California related things, as I live in New York.
