@sophomore: OMG! Go to Harvard SSP! I went last year, and it was suuuuuch a good experience. :)

I just got rejected from HSHSP. :P

Carin: I am sorry to hear that. Were you notified by snail mail or email?

Email. A few hours ago.
Stats: over 200 applied, 24 got in.

@Carin

how do u know those stats?

And I havent heard anything yet…

Has anyone contacted HSHSP for stats? Can someone post acceptance or rejection e-mails here?

@Carin: Whoa. That many people applied?

@uclane: The acceptance email has “HSHSP acceptance” as the subject. The director congratulates you in the actual email and attaches 2 documents. One is the official acceptance letter and the other is a form you have to fill out before the 15th.

Dear Applicant,

I want to thank you for applying to the High School Honors Science-Engineering-Mathematics research program at Michigan State University. I regret that I will not be able to include you in the program this summer; I received over 200 applications for approximately 24 positions, and the decisions have been very difficult. If you are currently a high school sophomore, I hope that you will apply next year; I will keep your present application materials, and new application forms will be posted in mid-December for the 2011 program.

My best to you in your search for a rewarding and challenging summer!

Sincerely,
Gail Richmond
Associate Professor of Biology and Science Education

Rejection Email Subject: HSHSP Declination Email
Reflection: I didn’t think I’d get… I only have a PSAT score and not too much experience so I was already at a disadvantage. Coupled with the fact that I’m only a sophomore, at least I tried! Good luck everyone. And chances are if you haven’t received an acceptance… I’m sorry to say this, but I don’t think you will.

@firelioness: Really?? I’m so glad you said that bc I based on what ppl on here have been saying about harvard ssp i have been considering not attending (ie waste of money, not taught by real profs, classes too easy etc.). So I’d love your input!!! I’m really confused about what to do over the summer so any help would be awesome :). And CONGRATS on getting in :)

Why dont you think all the rejection emails were sent already?

^i have not gotten a rejection email either. I read the thread from last year and it said that some notifications were very late (some ppl ended up calling hshsp)

did the people who got notifications really late mostly get rejected?

@sophomore: While the camp is expensive, the experience is definitely invaluable. Many of Harvard’s own professors teach the courses, and the guest professors are all REALLY good. One of the classes I took was Introduction to Psychology; it was phenomenal and the teacher was HILARIOUS. They treat you exactly like an undergrad, so you really do learn what it’s like to be a freshman in college. Also, you meet sooooo many amazing people (over 1,000 people go to the program). Also, you could try applying for a merit/need-based scholarship for SSP. I did, and they actually gave me a $2,000 merit scholarship. :D

To everyone else who’s still waiting for responses: Good luck and don’t give up yet! Based on last year’s thread, I think there might be a waiting list too.

@ firelioness:
Thanks for your input!! I do WANT to go to harvard ssp but I’ve had so many ppl tell me that university classes and volunteering at a local hospital would be more beneficial and look better on my app. But since now I have some reports of a good experience there… Well I still don’t know what I’m going to do but I will def take into consideration your advice, thanks for taking the time to do that!!!

And yes, has anyone received a waitlisted notice yet?!? Bc I have not received anything but I had lost hope bc apparently everyone had stopped receiving acceptances and started getting rejections.

Have not received anything yet.

Maybe I just suck so much that I just had to get rejected before everyone else.

There must be so many rejection emails for them to send, so people are receiving them at different
time one by one.

200 people applied. It’s not like they’re rejecting 30,000 applicants.

I’d rather receive an email earlier than later, even if it is an rejection, that way I can plan for summer earlier. Wish they had sent out the decisions at the same time.

@mabsjenbu:
it was a mixture…most were rejected but one girl was accepted.

And has ANYONE gotten waitlisted yet? Bc that’s what I’m hoping for now bc I still have not received anything
