HSHSP 2019

Hi all, I started a Facebook group for people going called HSHSP 2019 so we can keep up to date :slight_smile: I can’t wait to meet you all this summer!!

judging from the thread last year there were 2 waves and it covered all the accepted people. Does it seem like there were 2 waves for this year or no? The first wave was much earlier for last year however, so idk what the nature of these acceptances/rejections are…

I just received an email saying I was accepted as of 11 PM EST on April 18th…though the PDF was dated the 17th. Anyone who hasn’t received an email yet don’t lose hope, as there is still a chance.

Furthermore, I’ve been keeping track of this thread for about a month now and I just wanted to thank everyone that was on it for helping in predicting when these emails would come out. It’s been a pleasure to realize that there are plenty of students out there as crazy as I am when it comes to checking our emails for these types of things (I updated my email about 30 times an hour).

As for those that were accepted, I’m still waiting to hear back from two more programs before I decide. Regardless, I hope to meet you in Michigan!

As for those who were denied, don’t sweat it. I was denied from RSI, MITES, Mathroots, and TASPS. Sometimes it’s just the luck of the draw. Keep working hard and I’m sure we’ll all achieve our college dreams.

Hi! I got into HSHSP two days ago but I turned it down because I am already committed to another program. Hopefully that means one of you can get in!

Congrats @Duke47 ! Which programs are you waiting to hear from? Waiting on RISE and HSHSP here. The wait is frustrating.

Does anyone know how HSHSP and RISE compare? Of course haven’t yet gotten into either.

@indigoblue2002 it’s rough how decisions come out at different times. I almost wish it were like college where you know all your admissions before you have to commit. Where will you be going instead?

My theory is that the initial 24 were given upto 19th to confirm. As and when these selected don’t pay or send messages of not accepting, the 2nd/3rd in waitlist for that particular research opportunity will be contacted. So we should see a bunch of new acceptances after/around 19th.

@curiousme2 I’m waiting to hear back from LLRISE, as well as the BoA Student Leaders program (I was waitlisted so I’m waiting to hear back if that’ll turn into a rejection or an acceptance).

@abbypad My acceptance email was dated April 17th and told me I have until the 24th to respond or else they will give my spot to someone else. Hopefully this doesn’t throw off your theory…
Though I got the email on April 18th at 11 PM EST so I’m not sure why the PDF was dated April 17th, lol.

Is there a waitlist for HSHSP? I’ve never heard about it. At least in this thread people are either accepted or rejected. can anyone confirm this?

@JKMSNJ I believe @abbypad meant those in limbo are on an unofficial waitlist that Dr. Richmond maintains, not that anyone has received the notification they are on a waitlist. I looked back at several years worth of threads, and no one has said they were “waitlisted” only accepted, rejected, or still waiting to hear. I hope Abby is correct, and we’ll see a bunch of new acceptances after/around the 19th. It would make sense!

@Duke47 I thought the BoA one was business. Is it STEM-y? LLRISE sounds great (and free!) but only 2 weeks. Or maybe that’s a plus.

@JKMSNJ you seem to have your finger on the pulse of summer programs. Do you have any idea whether HSHSP or a RISE internship tends to offer a better experience?

@curiousme2 This year I decided to apply to 5 STEM programs (RSI, MITES, HSHSP, LLRISE, Mathroots) as well as a humanities program (TASPs) and the Student Leaders program (which, yes, is business). I believed an acceptance into any of the 7 would look awesome on college apps (and I’d love to attend!) as I plan to major in STEM and minor in business. I also love APUSH right now which is why I applied to TASPs.

Also, that’s a good question about LLRISE vs HSHSP. I haven’t heard back from LLRISE yet but if I get in, does anyone know how they compare?

@Duke47

Make sure to choose a program that fits your academic interests and not because “it will look good” on your college apps.

@curiousme2 I’m going to SSP! I’m really excited :slight_smile:

@GoBears2023 Yea I know, but I know I’m gonna love any program I attend when I’m surrounded by fellow students with the same rigor and interests as myself, looking nice on college apps is a bonus

@indigoblue2002 that’s amazing! Congrats!!!

Either @abbypad is right or Dr. Richmond really hasn’t chosen all 24 yet. Anyways, May 1st is only a few days away. Good luck to those still hanging on like me.

I went through the HSHSP threads in past a few years today. The alternates do exist, but only after Dr. Richmond fills the program around May 1, and (a) few of applicants will be picked as alternates in case the admitted students won’t be able to attend. Don’t keep your hopes up though, since very few alternates got in in the past.

Impressive digging, @JKMSNJ . I didn’t see that there were alternates in years past.

This year, it seems the two waves of acceptances were 4/12-13 and 4/17-18, with rejections interspersed, coming out starting 4/9.

I wonder if Dr. Richmond shifted the acceptances later to better align with SSP notifications (did she want students to immediately turn down HSHSP if they knew they were accepted to SSP, instead of hanging on and waiting for SSP?) Other than RSI, I’m thinking SSP would be the main “competition” for HSHSP students. Maybe I’m reaching.

@curiousme2 I hope your theory is right. But don’t forget some admitted kids don’t report their acceptance here or never come to this forum (like my S. he’s been busy with school sports). I still believe the program has been filled already. There may be very few, if none, lucky kids who will get in next 10 days. Good luck!

@curiousme2 I was told to respond by April 24th or else the spot will be given to someone else. I believe if you have not received a rejection letter yet you are one of a handful of students Richmond is keeping as de facto waitlist, and you will be informed of an acceptance or rejection based off whether or not the already accepted students reject or accept.

As for myself, I still have not heard back from two summer programs that could change my attendence, but I will be accepting and likely attending HSHSP this summer. I can’t wait to meet some of you guys!

wait so who else is waiting to hear back? ive been lurking on this thread lol
