Has anyone done it before? (how is it?)

Is anyone here applying for this program? If so, are you attaching a resume of some sort or...? It doesn't seem like the Adcom wants our accomplishments at all!

thanks!

Hey - I’m applying too. Well - they do say they don’t want you to describe an accomplishment in the essay - they more want you to describe why you want to go there instead of relaxin during the summer. BTW, how does your books read list compare to mine?

(Required) school reading for 04-05 school year

Decision: Waitlisted as sophomore

I think my decision may have been related to turning it late because the postal service returned my mail. :( They said that late applications will be considered on a space-available basis and yes, it went that way.I think I probably had the best chance at HSHSP among the competituve summer research programs (other than the UFlorida SSTP) because it did not want applicants to write about their accomplishments so my lack of scientific research wouldn't hurt me and it doesn't favor minorities although it probably does favor juniors. Still though -it doesn't feel so bad because there are VERY FEW sophomores among all the juniors so I would have a very high chance next year.

As for the yield, RSI acceptances came out a few days before HSHSP postmark date so a few RSI'ers may have decided not to apply to HSHSP at the last minute. Garcia, another similar program, announces acceptances before, but not well before HSHSP postmark date.

It hurts to remove my name from the waitlist but unfortunately, I may do that because SIMUW accepted me and getting to know the profs I'll be with next year may be more important than a research position hat could be done at the local university anyways.

Thw way I see watilists at summer programs as compared to waitlists at colleges is that summr programs typically have higher yields (because a lot of people only apply to 1) so summer programs only make as many acceptances as slots available while colleges typically have lower yields so they take more acceptances than slots available. Usually I would think that summer programs almost always have a few waitlists admitted because there's probably going to be a few applicants who decide not to come due to other summer programs or other summer plans while colleges can only guesstimate at their yields.

so YOU got waitlisted!??!
I forgot to mention, your essay was very very good. (esp compared to mine) You're a sophomore, too!

So the decisions are rolling in... sigh

Yeah I got waitlisted. To be waitlisted as a sophomore however is an impressive accomplishment in itself because from what I've been seeing, they pretty much are taking one sophomore per year(and these sophomores are pretty damn exceptional). Also tennisdude (another sophomore) has better stats than I do but I don't know about his essay.

I think my stats were alright but not good enough for HSHSP (math was near perfect but I had weaknesses in my English) - the essay elevated me up to waitlist status.

I've been thinking about this for a little bit longer - it may have actually been my lack of focus.Astronomy is actually my primary field of interest but as HSHSP doesn't seem interested in Astronomy I then gave the impression I would be interested in anything but without a particular passion.

Hey I'm a soph and I applied. I seriously don't think I'm getting in but it would definitely be nice if I did.

The program should be filled by May 10th..which is in 3 days. I still haven't heard a single word from them. ;[

i havent heard either, however, i had to send my transcirpt late, cuz my school didnt have it ready, but she said that would b ok. still... i never did get my postcard back for confirmation of application materials...

really. I haven't heard either. The only message I got from them is their APril 4th email saying they received it and will tell us who got in in TWO weeks... long over due. I have a feeling they're not doing one this year? idk. My application was on time, too.
well well well. THis sucks

has anyone heard yet?

simfish do u mind posting your stats?

I've heard from a few others that decisions came in. Is it true?

oh ..no. does that mean i didn't get in....

i didnt get in

HSHSP waitlisted me first, then gave me the rejection letter. This is very...weird because acceptances should come before waitlist rejections... Did acceptances come in earlier than the rejections or what? An organized program should send in acceptances and rejections on the same day, or at least on two separate days....

My stats:
Sophomore
3.98 GPA with calculus
790 SAT II Chem, 800 Math IIC, 213 PSAT (76 math), 1330 9th grade SAT
Indicated that i was self-studying for AP Calc BC and AP Chem (though to be honest, my "study" consisted of last-minute cramming lol)

No prior research experience or biology

I also qualified for AIME but could not sneak it into the application.

So what are your summer plans? HSHSP's application deadline is so late that i wonder if one can turn a summer program that accepted that person much earlier for HSHSP.

If you pretty much have no other plans (like I almost was - virtually no luck with summer programs at all), I would strongly suggest contacting professors. It's ESPECIALLY helpful if your university has a webpage offering for undergraduate help: I e-mailed 4 professors, 100% response rate, one invited me to visit him and I'll see him Friday!

However, a prof would probably be more willing to offer me a research position because I'll be attending the UWashington next year.

when did you guys receive your letters?????? i'm so curious

i got an email

dahhhhh what emaillll
the only email i got was the one from a month ago saying they would make decisions within the next 3-4 weeks
