HTC vs. LAC

Anyone have anything good to say about the Honors Tutorial College? Please post anything you have to say that could help me get a better idea about the worth of this program compared to a top 30 Liberal Arts College.

Well, it’s a truly unique college because not any other college in the country offers such a unique academic experience as strongly similar to that of Oxbridge’s.

You’ll certainly get the most personal/individualized training here, compared to any other top LAC, since it’s just you and the prof. There are other colleges that offer a tutorial program very similar to this one; Marlboro College, Williams College, Sarah Lawrence College and Swarthmore College. It’s just that with HTC’s, you start with tutorials from day one. At Marlboro/Williams/Swarthmore’s Honors/Sara Lawrence, you usually don’t get to tutorials 'til you’re a junior.

Also, these LACS I’ve mentioned shy in comparison to the vast amount of resources you’ll have available at OU, since you’d be on a university…just attending one of its constituent colleges.

Another great benefit about HTC is that it really tries to fund outside student projects; usually abroad.

It’s a wonderful way to make a larger school more intimate. LAC’s are often too small for many students, or quickly become too small. My sophomore son loves Ohio U and we are very happy with his choice. We are oos from Va.

My son moves in this Friday for his Freshman year at OU/HTC. The interaction that we have had so far with faculty and staff there has been phenomenal. If the education is anything like the care and enthusiasm that they have demonstrated so far, it’s going to be an amazing experience.

Also, OU outside of HTC really seems to have its act together. They are very well organized around the logistics of the college application experience. Frequent on-line chats for prospective parents and students, a smooth and responsive application and financial aid process, well-organized and informative orientations. Even the Bursar’s office makes it easy (not painless, but at least easy) to pay for things.

My son’s final choice was down to OU/HTC and two quite prestigious Midwest LACs. I think he made the right choice.

All the best, madmansdad.

So Madmansdad, how does your son like HTC now that he is there?

GoldenFinch: He’s loving it. He says that he’s meeting lots of very talented, friendly and interesting people. There’s so much going on. He’s already engaged in comedy, improv and film projects, and is working one-on-one in a tutorial.

snugapug: Thank you!
