I am very saddened that the Hubble Space Telescope is broken and scientists are not having any success fixing it. I have watched with awe the photographs that it has sent back over the years. My favorite picture was the one called Pillars of Creation. I hope that they can repair it. It will be a great loss to all of us if it can’t be repaired.

Only a few more months (hopefully) until the more powerful James Webb telescope launches. Meanwhile, I’m reading that engineers still think they can restore the Hubble by using backup hardware.

That’s the Webb that was supposed to be in orbit in 2007 at a cost of $500M. The October 2021 launch of the now-$10B program is at risk.
Kudos to the Hubble team for keeping it operational this long. Shame the Webb program hasn’t been as effective. I’m not betting the farm on a 2021 launch just yet.
Hopefully the engineers can figure out how to get around the Hubble issues. NASA/JPL folks have been quite good at solving spacecraft/lander issue in the past.
