Huffing Incident

Oliver is an old man. He graduated KP in 1977.

Are you speaking in the third person?

Man, that IS old . . . =0)

No that's not old. My oldest son was born in 1977...........that makes me really old Oliver :)

I'm just picking on Ollie -- I have a husband his age!

My wife has one older than that.

....but has he aged as gracefully as Oliver???

I doubt he aged as gracefully as you, Ollie . . . he was grabbing and clawing trying to avoid the big 5 - 0 . . . I imagine I'll be the same way as I push 40 =0)

Well...Whatever happened with the infamous Huffing incident? (tlswogh) is there ANYTHING you'd like to share with the forum on the final outcome. (you did start the thread)
If not tlswogh, can anyone say what finally happened?

This type of behavior is not sanctioned at any service academy.
Such actions are not tolerated.
Appropriate disciplinary actions have been/are being taken based on the facts discovered.

Unfortunately , TLS seemed to list names and imply that there was no action forthcoming. Simply not true. Just because a plebe is unaware of the procedures for an investigation, the timeframe required for the discovery process, and the consequences meted out doesn't mean that due process isn't being followed. This situation was treated with all due gravity. Perhaps TLS was just impatient that something hadn't happened right away.

I don't believe that TLS was intending to implying complacency on behalf of the administration. I simply think he was premature, and perhaps not self-assured enough to directly inquire and follow up. That will come, with time.

The 3 were disenrolled a couple of weeks ago

zonker -- clear your private message box. I tried to send you a pm and your box is full. :D

I would like to point out that the Academy's substance abuse policy specifically refers to illegal drug and alcohol abuse. I dont think anyone is arguing that there has to be reprecussions for their actions but since the MIDN Regs are rather vague, I'm not quite sure that the E board's decision to separate these plebes from the Academy was entirely fair. Regardless, I think that the substance abuse policy needs to be updated.

If someone is dumb enough to huff a can of dust off for a buzz and get caught, then they are clearly not smart enough to be a mate or engineer on a ship. They deserved what they got because it may not be illegal or in the regs but it is pure stupidity. There is also a long list of effects that could be seen to make someone medically unfit to be at the academy.

i bet they didn't include dust off because they must have assumed that they were not retards. go light a dumpster on fire and inhale the toxic fumes. tell me if it gets you messed up, then go report your findings to doctor wall. have some common sense you moron

As I said before, no one is saying that these plebes were thinking when they made their decision to be immature. What I am trying to point out is that there is a legal technicallity in the regs that needs to be addressed. If a similar scenario existed in the world outside of the Academy, they would have been exonerated or received a less severe punishment. Look at all the loop holes that spared OJ Simpson from being convicted in the 90s.

I'd also like to ask if a midshipman is dumb enough to get caught for a drinking offense, is he/she still fit to be a mate or an engineer on a ship? Last time I checked, underage drinking is illegal and it is addressed in the regs. I can even name a few midshipmen/alumn that have had multiple drinking offenses while at the Academy.

Again I'd just like to make it clear that I am not condoning the actions of the plebes. I just believe that the accused have the right to a fair trial.

Drinking and Huffing don't compare at all. I wasn't saying that the only reason they were stupid is because they were caught, huffing itself is worse than getting caught. As for the underage drinking you already said yourself that it's fit for the people that were caught to be a mate or engineer. You know many midn and ALUMNI that have been caught, so its obvious to me that the navy and coast guard see it as they are fit to serve and be in command of ships. Another thing is huffing is seen as wrong no matter what age you are, but drinking on the other hand is illegal until the day you turn 21 then its ok. I also don't see why you are trying to defend these kids for a "fair" trial. The executive board was created because the school did not have a fair system in place. Because of that the school was brought to court and from then on the executive board has existed. Huffing itself may not be in the regs but I'm sure it was not the only offense these plebes had. There are plenty of other things that go on at the school that are not seen as fair, and i don't know many upperclassmen that see the punishment they got as unjust, these plebes were just wasting the schools budget which is tight anyways.
