Hug your kids hard tonight

A boy from my highschool class was killed in a car accident early this morning while home visiting friends and family. Bad things do happen even in wonderful little towns like mine, on the very same roads where we so often walked, biked, and drove.

Please remind your children both of how much you love them and the importance of cautious driving.

Just the other day two girls from the town next to mine were killed when their car hit an embankment. The car went in to the river, one girl survived and was trying to dive down to get her friends and she couldn't find the car so she ran and got help, but it was too late. They were 'A' students and promised athletes :(

So, so sad. hugs to all.

Sorry to hear such sad news, Elizabeth and Corey.

Elizabeth - thinking of you. It is so very hard to have this happen so close to you. Take care of yourself, give yourself time to mourn. My thoughts are with you.

corey - so tragic, so sorry to hear.

Sorry to hear your news Elizabeth. It is hard to believe when a young life is taken so suddenly. My D lost a good friend in a traffic accident more than two years ago. It was devastating for her and her classmates. They found comfort in establishing an annual memorial concert at school in the girl's memory. Since the girl was a talented musician, every year during the concert, it is as if she is back at school sharing her gifts again. Her parents attend and find great comfort in the joyful event each year. Perhaps you can find some similar way of remembering your classmate in a way that best suits his memory. Take care.

As much as the new college students may not want to hear it from us parents, please remind them to be careful. An 18 year old freshman at Christopher Newport was killed last week when she stepped out in front of a car on a very busy street. The driver who hit her was a 21 year old student. Also, don't know how much national "play" it's getting but there's a missing freshman woman from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. Labor Day weekend in the evening she told her roommate she was going out for awhile, and never returned. They treated it as a missing person at first, finally got the City police and FBI involved, and now, finally, two weeks later her car was found, so they are finally treating it as an abduction. Just, be careful out there.
