So Barnard has always been my dream school, but my parents (for financial reasons) insisted that I apply regular decision. Now, after a series of events not worth listing here, circumstances have changed and they’re allowing me to apply ED.

I’d be thrilled but for 1 problem: Barnard requires 2 subject tests, and I’ve only taken 1 (US history-740). I had been assuming I’d take lit and Spanish in November, choose the better of the 2, and then submit them to all my schools as regular decision. Now, obviously, I’m in a bit of a bind; the earliest I can take subject tests is obviously in November, and Barnard’s due date is November 15th. Assuming I have all the other parts of my application ready (I already do) could I email them, explaining the situation, and get some leniency?

I’m absolutely freaking out because I’m realizing in hindsight how stupid I was not to just take them earlier when I could have. I’m completely in love with Barnard, and since I’m already a bit of a reach there I REALLY want to apply ED. Can anyone give me any advice in this situation? Any help is very, very appreciated. Thanks!

If nothing else - you could late register for the October 22nd ACT and rush your scores. I believe Barnard will accept the SAT plus 2 SAT II’s or just the ACT. Still I would suggest talking to Barnard and your HS college counselor - they may offer other options. Last year I believe there were several students who had late materials who, once the deficiencies were resolved, were accepted ED.

If Barnard is a reach for you, you may not be doing yourself any favors by applying ED. Just think it through logically: why would they accept someone ED whose stats are a reach? They could, of course, defer you but they might out and out reject you. I know nothing of your stats and could not give you realistic “Chances” any way (nor could anyone else here), I am just going on what you have said.

Why not take your time and take the other subject tests as you had planned and also get fantastic grades this semester so you have additional good stuff to show them and apply RD??

If you insist on applying ED, I would call Barnard admissions and explain the situation just as you have described it here…that Barnard IS your top choice and your parents just agreed to allow you to apply ED. They will advise you as to what you can do about the subject tests, I am sure. They will also know how interested you are in Barnard…

I have the same problem! However, by taking the ACT you do not need to submit the subject tests. Also, try and talk to an admission officer and, if at all possible, arrange an interview. That will show interest and increase chances!!
