I'm in my 3rd week of school and I'm in IB SL Math II, which is basically Calculus. The problem is my teacher has never taught a higher level class and he DOES NOT know how to teach! This is not one of the things where I'm doing badly so I blame the teacher. Like we had a quiz a few days ago and he went over the first 3rd of the answers --- I got 0 right!!! And it wasn't just me, it was everybody!!!

I've always gotten As in math, I have over a 4.0 GPA, and I study very hard, but this teacher is just horrible. The class tried talking to him, but he said even if everybody gets basically everything wrong, it doesn't mean that he'll throw out the quiz or even curve it!

Does anybody have any advice for me??? I'm seriously worrying that this class will ruin my GPA and hurt my college chances!

Talk to your principal. If >80% fails test then there's something wrong with teacher -- he must be teaching, not giving out assignments and talking.

i already tried learning from the book . . . but he has all these other concepts that aren't in the book. i'll look into a tutor i guess, i hope it would help because my teachers method it the strangest thing ever!!

All I can say is figure out what he's trying to teach you. I mean, there has to be some coherent thoughts and lessons in there somwhere. I think it's pretty foolish of your class to want him to forget that grade. Do you really think a professor is going to throw out the grade on a test that everybody did poorly on?

Get a tutor. You and others can complain to the principal, but truth is, calculus teachers are hard to find, so it's not likely there's going to be a big change in the teacher or the teacher's methods this year.

Get a tutor. Calculus isn't hard if you have a good teacher. Trust me. I've had both varieties of teachers ;) Also, this may seem like a weird suggestion, but see if you can get a physicist to teach you calculus. If you can learn about why and what you are actually doing, instead of just memorizing random techniques, you'll be much better off.

Also, I might be able to help if you're stuck on a specific problem or concept. I'm on AIM sometimes, so feel free to IM me. I <3 Calc now. (Yeah, I guess that kinda makes me a nerd...)

but anyways...i agree with everyone else here. GET A GOOD TUTOR.
i was in the same boat last year in my math analysis class. my teacher was pretty horrible, but i found a really good tutor who HELPED A LOT. i went from getting a C in the class to a very solid A both semesters.
to me calculus is easier than math analysis, so having a tutor should make things a lot easier and clearer.

I'm in the same boat as the OP. My Calc teacher is some sort of genius, he's so smart that he doesn't even teach the class... He expects us to teach it to ourselves from an online textbook. I think its insane that he still gets payed as much as other teachs who actully teach (it's part of the job description, hell, it's in the name).

Alright, maybe I was a little wrong about principal but my point is: if everyone gets 0% on test, doesn't this mean that there's something wrong with test or the grader?

This is just like my H Chem teacher. Horrible. Makes fun of students. Intimidates students. Asks rhetorical questions. Stern. Teaches poorly. And so on and so forth.
I'd just get a tutor and try to self-study. It really sucks when TEACHers can't TEACH.

thanks for all the advice!! the teacher realized that something was wrong with is methods since everyone failed the quiz, so he decided to go over everything again and the class kind of helped him with his method and he's going to give us another quiz next week. i get it for now, but i still might get a tutor.
