I got in for fall admission at the University of Maryland and St. Mary's College of Maryland. I absolutely love St. Mary's and actually submitted my deposit a few weeks ago. Lately, however I've been thinking that I didn't give UMD enough thought, so I'm going tomorrow for a visit. If I like UMD better than St. Mary's should I still submit a deposit? I know that this is really against the rules but idk what to do. Also, do you think it would be possible to get my fall admission for UMD switched to spring, so that if I didn't like St. Mary's than I could just enroll at UMD?

I really need help, and don't know what to do. My mom is of course ****ed off and I haven't even told my dad yet....

I have heard about double depositing in the past. It is frowned upon, but I am assuming St. Mary’s reallly can’t do anything about it. I am assuming UMCP will want to take your deposit, at least for fall semester - they want your tuition and attendance, right?

umd is beautiful. i feel in love with the campus as soon as i set my foot on the campus. you’ll love it when you go there. and def. visit dc if you get the chance. DC has just about everything a person wants, and its very clean. i feel like its cleaner than much other cities, and job program stuff at umd is tops in the nation.

Don’t do it. 1) You can lose admission to both schools 2) You don’t have a valid reason other than you want to think about Maryland more.

You said you don’t think you gave UMD enough thought. If you loved St. Mary’s, I think you will be unhappy at UMD. St Mary’s has about 2,000 students, Maryland has about 15 times that. St. Mary’s is a pastoral setting, Maryland is urban.

I have a feeling that you have a classic case of cold feet, so you are second-guessing your decision. I’m glad you are visiting because that should help you understand the huge difference in the schools. Let us know how it goes, but please don’t double deposit.

Having cold feet is very normal. My S who will be going to UMD in the fall felt this way as he notified Villanova of his denial last night. (Seems like a form of “buyer’s remorse”)
My advice would be to go visit if you feel strongly compelled to do so, but remind yourself of what you loved about St.Mary’s. If you are unhappy at St. Mary’s (unlikely) you could always transfer to UMD.
Good Luck.

I had to choose between St. Mary’s and CP too. I chose college park because where as st. mary’s has intimate classes, it is NOT around anything. And this isn’t just bad for having fun, but being close to D.C. brings me so many internship opportunities.
I came to UMD because I am a musician and it behooved me to go to a place where my music would obviously reach more people.
CP is kind of way too big, and may seem impersonal, but once you find your niche you will be right at home.

I know someone who send deposits to all the schools they got in. It’s not fair to have ot be locked into ONE school if you don’t want to really go there.
You should be fine.

Thanks guys. I didn’t visit today, as my mom told me not to miss anymore school. I do think that I’m getting cold feet though, but I can always transfer if I don’t like smcm

I think you made a good decision. My niece fell in love with St. Mary’s on her first visit and is now a sophomore there. She still loves it. When she was looking at colleges she did visit UMD and hated it compared to St. Mary’s.

My own daughter fell in love with UMD at first light. A completely different reaction than my niece. She will attend UMD in the fall. She never went to see St. Mary’s but rolled her eyes at the small student body, location, etc. My point is, different strokes for different folks. I think that if you really liked St. Mary’s, UMD would not have been to your liking. Good luck at St. Mary’s! I think you will love it there and, as you mentioned, you can always transfer if it isn’t what you hope for.
