Huge Problem ...

Hey You Guys,

So I just realized ... I didn't apply through the program I wanted to. I wanted to do Chemical Engineering, but instead, I did the Ag and Biological Engineering. Big whoops, right? I just emailed my admissions counselor at UIUC to ask, but I just want to see if I can get any insight here.

Will it be possible for me to actual still get consider through the Chemical Engineering department instead? If not ... is it possible for me to actually switch departments? I'm just a bit confused and a little worried because admissions come out soon!

Thanks!

Not sure how you could possibly have made that mistake (including what did you put in your essay asking you describe your academic interest).

To change, you would need to submit an Application Change Request Form and you would have to do another academic interest essay. If you do it now it would likely mean your decision would be deferred until February. If you do not do it now and are admitted December 11, you cannot change it afterward. If deferred December 11 you could request the change by Janaury 1.

If you do not request the change and are admitted, then essentially you will be in the Ag Bio major for freshman year but could request a change for second year (as lonmg as grades are good at that time change is easy; if grades suck at that time, change is tough). Classwise, that is not that big a deal because freshman tend to take most of the same courses regardless of major including chemistry.

Drusba, I could be mistaken, but don’t admitted students also have the option to change their engineering major at summer registration as long as a program isn’t closed? As far as I knew, this applied to ChBE as well even despite the LAS affiliation. True?

That can be requested but Chem E is usually a filled program and the stated policy is now against doing that as of this upcoming freshman class: [U</a> of I Admissions: Admitted FAQ](Page Not Found, Illinois Undergraduate Admissions)

Note, the Eng/LAS college difference is irrelevant for chemE as it would be treated the same as a departmental change rather than a college change. Also, as of this year Ag and Bio E is now officially considered to be part of both the Ag and Eng colleges whereas before it was officially only in Ag (although unofficially it always followed the enginnerring college and treated as being part of such).

Thank you drusba.

In my interest essay, I talked about a general interest in engineering, but also facets of chemistry and biology, so i wasn’t too specific so hopefully I am able to pull that off… :/

Also, thank you for the insight. I probably will take that course of action in college if I do end up attending UIUC. I read the FAQ page, and it was basically what you said, and that makes sense. So, hopefully the transition will be smoothless.

Thank you!
