Did anyone major in human rights at Columbia University who can share their experience there? What careers do students who choose that major tend to go on to? How difficult is the major compared to other liberal arts majors like philosophy or history? Are the courses substantive/worthwhile? Any info about the program would be greatly appreciated.
Yeah it’s kind of a joke. What do you do with a “human rights” major? Work at a nonprofit? Go to law school? It’d be much better to major in something substantive than just “SJW pre-law,” you know?
I’m not a HR major but I have some friends who were. It’s a very interdisciplinary major and you will take a lot of classes outside of the department. There aren’t actually too many Human rights courses, just a few introductory courses, a methods course and some senior seminars.
Also I don’t consider SJW an insult, but there are more SJW-esque majors at Columbia like CSER, Woman and Gender studies, AFAM etc. You’ll be in NYC, and Human rights would be a pretty good option for international law and non profit jobs, but I would recommend pairing it with something else.
Dear Aurelian: How is human-rights a joke, and how is SJW an insult. Just because they want to make sure that people across the world can have the same liberties and freedom that you were given, so you can come complain about how stupid helping others is not stupid. Human rights is a very serious subject and I think that if you know what you want to do with your life then you have a good chance of finding a job. Also yes, human rights would probably be a great pre-law major to go into considering much of law is considering ethics and laws concerning our clients. Also sorry if I have bad grammar, I had to type this up really quick before I got on the bus.
