Humanities at Rice

How good are the humanities at Rice? Can anyone name the best departments? I heard that their English and philosophy departments are really good. Is studio art strong at Rice?

i'm humanities. they are aighhh i guess. nuttin special. no idea about studio art.

What about history? And what jobs can you get with a history major anyway? I can only think "teacher" but is there anything else because I am really not all that interested in teaching but I still love history. Maybe I should just change my major and go into natural sciences instead.........

that is much much easier said than done. almost no one just changes their major from humanities and goes into natural science, its almost always the other way around. you obviously have a lot of thinking to do and i won't try to convince you of anything based on my own prejudices, but going into natural sciences is a very big decision because the grading is so much harder than humanities. its really a plunge, because if you decide against it later, you will have lowered your gpa. and if you decide to pursue it, the competition is tougher.

this makes options such as med school and law school less of a possibility. in fact an appreciable amount of pre-meds don't even major in natural science and opt instead for english, economics, or the like. what can you do with a history major that you can't do with any other degree? i'm not sure. IMO you should focus on taking a variety of classes and be in position so that when someone or something really sparks your interest, you can go with it.

whatever...don't assume that the only job u can get with a history degree is a teacher. no offense, but your vision is pretty limited if you can't imagine any other jobs...with a history degree you can basically do whatever you want -- thats the whole point of a liberal arts degree. i'm majoring in philosophy, and the whole point of that major is to teach you how to think and write, which is wayy more important than what to think. don't think too much about whether a major is practical or not. if you don't like the subject, it's more impractical for you to waste four years of your life studying it. but anyway, does anyone know if studio art is any good at rice?
