So I know Cal has, like, the top Eng grad department in the country, but as far as undergrad goes, how does humanities at UCLA compare to Cal? Social sciences?

hmm...good feedback guys.

could you be more specific as to which humanities or social science departments youre looking at?

Um...? Hehe, well, I don't really know what I want to major in, but I just know it will be in the humanities and social sciences. I guess, like, English? Communications? Politics? Education?

i can only speak for what i'm familiar with. politics (called political science by colleges) is better at berkeley than it is at UCLA (i believe berkeley is #1 for undergrad poli sci among the UC's), but both have really good political science departments nonetheless... you probably won't be able to feel the difference. the UCLA political science department is one of the best and biggest at UCLA, and i believe it is also the most popular choices for a major or minor.

no california school has Education as a major because in california, you are required to major in an academic subject before you further pursue education. however, UCLA does offer an Education minor (very hard to get in, limited spacing) that is taught by the Graduate school of education (ranked #2 by US news, only harvard is better). very very good professors in this department. i think UCLA wins this one hands down.

communications... this is just an assumption, but because it requires pre-requisites, it means that it is competitive and students must apply to get into the major (same with political science, but because the poli sci dept is bigger, most students get into it). i'm assuming that it is good since it is a popular/impacted major here. however, i have heard that berkeley communications is better... or at least among my friends seeking a journalism-related career prefer to go to berkeley than ucla.

english i'm not as sure.
