Humanities-Oriented Asians Here

Hi. :)
Are there really less of us? I'm sure there's plenty out there.

My friend is a music-oriented Asian. But, he thinks reading is “stupid” and called our history class “boring” so…

I’m inclined to everything you just mentioned. nothing’s boring for me.

Now that I think about it, Humanities-Inclined is a better term to express the same meaning…Because I like math and sciences too, just not as much.

@ifax;
I have a friend similar to yours too.

@snapepotter;
you must be a curious person.

curious as in shrewd, not weird. :D

OH MY GOD THIS THREAD DESCRIBES ME PERFECTLY.

Other Asians call me dumb because I got 95% in Math Honours :'(

I love Social Studies and English. Hate Science -.-

There’s a strong, well-researched connection between aptitude in math and in music–so your musically gifted friend who doesn’t like the humanities isn’t a contradiction in terms, ifax. That said–hooray for you, intrinsically, for not buying into a stereotype and being yourself. :slight_smile: Asia has produced many, many fine artists, writers, and philosophers, just as the West has had its share of gifted mathematicians and scientists. I hate to see anyone pigeonholed based on his/her ethnicity.

Honestly, I was surprised when I got to Exeter and there were so many asians who weren’t in super-high math classes and who preferred English and History and were in lower math course than me.

I’m Asian, and I absolutely despise math and physics. The other sciences are alright, but my favourites are definitely English, history, and political science. We’re out there, just hiding. :D

i think there are a good number of humanities oriented asians. i know a lot who are just good at math and …life.
asians ftw!

I like math, and astrophysics. I think I am very good, but definitely not exceptional (and especially not by Exeter/Andover standards) for an asian.

Anyway, my passion lies in the humanities. I think part of the reason why I don’t like math and science quite as much also lies in the way it is taught in my school. As in, lecture style, very little actual problem solving. Who knows, I could get to boarding school and all of that would change.

I will always love writing, though.

@intrinsically,
In my school, our science class is great. In our science class, we do a ton of problem solving. In math, we listen to our teacher attempt to explain a concept. And then the best math student in our class always comes up to the board and explains the concept really clearly to us. So, as you can imagine, math is not my favorite subject…

Here!
Speech and debate is my life. That being said, philosophy is my second life and politics is my third life.

I understand that math and science could be really “fun,” but the way they are taught at my school undermines any chance of their being fun.

im asian and musically-oriented but my friend is also asian, she can drone on and on and on during debates so she enjoys humanities. I’m jealous of her cause she goes against the stereotypes :(, she’s super tall also which is another stereotype that asians are short.
