Just double checking: Band and music theory count as humanities correct? In other words, my music teacher can fill out the Teacher Recommendation B form (for humanities teacher)?

Umm, where I cam from, band and music is art. And humanities is more of a social science. But that's just where I live.

Wikipedia lists music and the performing arts as a humanity....so I'm assuming that having my music teacher write my Form B recommendation would not be a problem. Anyone else want to weigh in on this?

I agree with TBOL3; music is an art-- unless you have taken perhaps ap music theory with him/her I wouldn't recommend asking them for a rec. I'd go for an english/history teacher who knows you well.

What about just music theory? (My school doesn't offer AP Music Theory) I had her for music theory and she knows me very well from Concert & Marching Band, Jazz Band, School Musicals, and A Capella. Also art is considered a humanity...so therefore I think it would be fine.

yeah, then I'd say go for it

You could email the admissions office and ask

Yeah, I'll e-mail just in case. If it doesn't count as a humanity then I'm royally screwed.....I just assumed that music was a humanity.

I'd suggest a more traditional Humanities teacher recommendation; then send in a third letter from the Music teacher. One extra letter is reasonable, especially if it offers other information about you not otherwise obvious. My son's third letter last year was from his piano teacher of nine years, who observed and commented on traits not evident in school.

I would still suggest something a little more along the lines of history or english.

I've always been under the impression that anything contained in MIT's school of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences would count as a "humanities" rec for MIT. There's no need for the recommendation to be from a history or English teacher specifically.

Mine was by my theatre teacher, which would technically be an art rather than one of the humanities.

Thank you very much Mollie, you have put my mind at ease :)
