Humanities Sequence

Did anyone take it? Does anyone know how tricky it is to get in? What kind of workload does it entail?

Thanks for any info you might have.

My older brother took it. It's an incredible amount of work - reading and writing a monumental list of books. On the other hand, it's a double credit, so you'd only take two other courses at the same time.

I have no idea how tricky it is to get in, as he's a writing genius whose essay no doubt blew them out of the water, but I hope it's not TOO tricky ... I want to take it so badly! Good luck with your application, if you decide to go for it, and hopefully we'll meet there this fall!

I took it last year, and it is an unbelievable expierence that I would recomend to anyone really interested in the humanities who can stomach the workload, which is admittedly intense, even considering that it is double credit. It is not, however, an impossible amount of work - probably an average of 300 pages per week, and a 4-5 page essay every 2 -3 weeks. Again, remember that it is two courses a semester, so we're talking about 150 pages per course. By the end, you'll have had a wonderful introduction to western civilization, read some of the most seminal texts ever written under the instruction of accessible, engaging, and brilliant professors, and had the pleasure of commiserating about the work with about 30 other hard core humanities people, some of whom will likely become close friends of yours.

I would estimate that about 2/3 of those who apply get in. If you don't get in initially, however, I would highly reccomend speaking to one of the professors - probably Bianca Calabresi, a fellow with the Council of the Humanities who I think is handling most of the administrative issues - about how much you want to take the class. If someone drops out within the first two weeks - in our year, two people did because of course conflicts/workload - they'll go to the waitlist, and if she has you in mind, you might be the one that gets off. You could also try to get in for second semester.

it was beyond amazing...I second everything cara said
