Do the students who live in Hume have a bad/nerdy reputation?

Yes, they are social pariahs who get ostracized from the rest of the campus.

I suggest Broward.

Why? They are the nicest dorms??

Broward? are you kidding me? That dorm is terrible. Hume is fine during the summer. The kids who stay there tend to be very social. There are only a handful of dorms open during the summer. However, I would agree that Hume takes on that reputation during the fall though, when all the honor kids move in.

So, no one has ever met any decent/social honors students?

Brit - My thoughts exactly. Talk about judging people before you even know them - sheesh!

It is really what you prefer.

I recommended Broward because it is a very social dorm. You will have a good time and make a lot of friends.

Nevertheless, the facilities are not as nice as Hume.

Hume is new and is currently exclusive to Honors students. That means you will likely see many people with their dorm rooms closed as they study throughout the night.

It is a give and take.

Do you want the old party dorm?

Or do you want the new study dorm?

Dabigdawg72- dude you’re just a junior in high school. You’re giving advice like you go to Uf and have been for 4 years. You don’t know anything about the dorms so stop acting like it.

My grandparents live in Gainesville and my brother goes to school there where he is involved in the greek system (pike).

I go up there nearly once every two weeks. Not to mention I went to pretty much every football game.

I probably know much more about Gainesville than most of the people on the forum.

The honors group at the preview I just attended definitely didn’t contain nerdy, weird, antisocial kids. I’m sure every dorm has its fair share of those though.

Ehm, the honors program doesn’t have geekiness as a prerequisite. The main requirement is high SAT scores, which means people there actually study less and have more free time while still being able to maintain good grades.

A high SAT does not equal nerd, and even if your worried, the cut off SAT score isn’t even that high which means there will be a good mix of students who will doubtlessly have great social skills. I have friends at school who are attending Hume and have met current Honors students. Frankly I’m not worried.

My son spent 2 years at Hume and would have continued living there, but all his friends wanted to move off campus. Friends he has had since day one at Hume moved together to an off campus location.

Hume is the nicest dorm at UF. It is not a party dorm. The students that live in Hume are bright, some may be considered nerdy. My son had no problem making friends. His experience at Hume has laid the groundwork for his entire UF career.

Anybody who has an opportunity to be in the UF Honors program at Hume may benefit from their involvement.

I am going to apply for the Honors college, but I am not sure whether I will live in Hume yet.

I’m just going to tour the dorms themselves and ask some students to get the overall opinion of Hume students.

The other dorms are pretty old though, including Broward as I said.

I lived in Hume over the summer and loved it.

I don’t understand why people try to stereotype an ENTIRE dorm. I can promise that you will find anti-social, social, weirdos, cool kids, etc in all of the dorms on campus.

I certainly hope you are right! :)

My D just got her room assignment and she will be in Hume East. She is VERY outgoing and social and loves sports, too. She wants to try it all … intramural sports, greek life, etc. I hope she gets a roomate who feels the same.

i got assigned to hume and wanted to kill myself. my roommate was the typical hume kid and i hated it so bad. the people on my floor were extremely boring. i moved to rawlings in the spring and it was a different story. so much better, even though it wasnt nice at all. not to mention hume is so far from everything, you feel like you are isolated.

for me, hume was miserable, but i guess some people like it.

Can I ask what are the specific differences you’ve found between living in Hume and Rawlings in terms of social life/fun?

Wow - You wanted to “kill yourself”?? That sounds pretty extreme. Surely, there was more going on than that.

So far, the kids that my D has been communicating with that are headed into Hume sound quite normal. <grin> They want to have the whole UF experience - great classes, football games, social activities and even sports. </grin>

I have noticed that student’s personalities seem to come in waves. It might sound silly but having been in the school system for years from elementary thru high school … some classes are just more social than others. I have watched this class of '09 for many years now and they are an extremely social/outgoing group of kids. I think it won’t matter where you live for these freshman. They will grow wherever they are planted.

In regards to difficulty, how is hard it to get in?

I am kinda worried because I am not a merit finalist, the only real hook.

I got a 2130 Score on my SAT, but I have heard many with similar stats get rejected.

Anybody have any numbers about admissions?

Correct me if I’m wrong but I’m pretty sure you just need a 1400 SAT score and a 4.0 UF GPA and they’ll send you an application. Then you just send in the application and you’re pretty much guaranteed in.
