Hume

I have heard mixed thoughts about Hume:
some say it is "anti-social", some love the quiet, some say the people are great, some say the people are terrible.

If you have lived in Hume please share your experience and whether or not you think it is a good place to live freshman year.
If I get into UF I will get into the Honors College and am wondering if it would be important to live in Hume or to live in a community style dorm, so any info would be great.

I'm a parent, so I apologize, but I have two sons who have lived in Hume. They both were very social, joined a fraternity, go to all the games, parties, yada yada... you get the idea. Basically the impression I get is that it's definitely not a party dorm, although the kids are nice and my sons made some friends there. It's a good place to LIVE. Think about where you want to lay your head. That's a lot different than where you want to... well we won't go there. Anyway, Hume is basically the Hilton of dorms at UF- brand new, clean, quiet, clean, nice, did I mention clean? It worked out well for my sons and they are not stay-in-the-room-and-study-all-the-time type kids. Smart kids are not necessarily boring. They have it in them to make the most fun. ;)

it's really clean and nice...almost too clean and sterile...but most other dorms seem a lot more social and i regret living in hume...I don't feel it is worth the extra money

It really depends on the floor you get. Some floors are anti-social and some are "normal" by college standards. Of course, if you end up getting cool roommates, then it won't be a problem if the dorm is generally not as outgoing as the others.

Most find Hume a good experience.

Actually, my D's hoping for "not typical normal" if she attends UF. A friend of ours from church moved out of hume because of an unbearable situation with her roommate and her roomate's boyfriend (a defacto 3rd roommate). Living arrangments can be difficult when your moral standards, regarding sleep-overs and drinking, are different than others around you. She'd hoped, naively of course, that she might not run into as much of that by staying in Hume. She learned, obviously, that was an erroneous assumption.

zebes

thanks for the info. sounds like its just a hit or miss situation based on your roommate... but thats for any dorm. at least hume is clean though...

I visted Hume once and while the rooms are nice, it was dead quiet. Plus you have to clean your own bathroom and its no where near anything on campus (except the parking garage and maybe frat row) so you have the extra hassle of that.

I just dont like the idea of having to clean my own bathroom and cleaning up three other peoples messes personally. But then again I live in Broward and I dont think its that dirty or gross.

you don't have to clean your own bathroom...a cleaning lady comes once a week and cleans the bathroom and sink thoroughly

yea, what are talking about kristen? as chamilitary said, they are cleaned once a week.

Some years the dorm is more social than others..it makes sense though..it depends on the particular class...

Yeah, once a week but you still have 6 other days where it can get dirty and nasty. Sometimes you do end up clean up yourself because the other 3 people using it are nasty.

I'll keep my comments about Hume to myself. I'm not a fan as the majority of you seem to be.

serchingon, I didn't realize you were a UF student.

Most of the negative comments about Hume are made by those on the outside. It's a cleaner and safer environment than the other dorms, which is better suited to serious students.

Having been in Hume for over three months, I'd have to say that your experience depends a lot on your floor. Some floors are very social while others are not so much.

you can compare dorms all you want, but really, it comes down to what YOU make of it-- not what it makes for you.
