Just wondering how much the adcoms appreciate humour in an essay. :)

what type of humour? sarcasm?

be careful
ask at least 10 people if they find the statement funny
if even 1 says no, dont do it

I don’t know… If I were going over hundreds of applications, I think I could use a good laugh.

They actually mentioned this at the info session when I visited Yale; they said that if you’re funny that’s great and they love to see that in the essay, but if you’re not funny your college application is no place to start trying to be funny. I know this doesn’t exactly answer your question, but if you genuinely think you’ve written something funny, I would say go for it. There’s humor in my essay, for what that’s worth.

Also, are your British? Or Aussie/Kiwi/Indian/South African/Canadian/etc?

I think that as long as your humor is well-integrated into your essay–you don’t just come right out and make a joke, or throw in randomly ridiculous words–you’re fine. Make sure it works even if the adcom fails to find it funny.

Do adults who are not members of your family consider the essay funny? And remember that even if it’s funny, it still has to show you in a positive light.
