Is it a competitive school? I thought CUNYs were basically like a step up from CCs and not hard to get into at all. But when I looked on College Board I was surprised to see the admittance rate at just 25%! Thats more competitive than NYU. It didnt strike me as that type of school. I pictured it being people who did poorly in HS (like me) trying to build grades up, or older folks taking part time classes, and parents trying to get back into school. You know, like usual CCs. I am a bit nervous now. My grades were good enough to get me into Fordham...idk if thats saying anything though. -__-

So, would you agree with that 25% on College Board? Is it really that hard of a school to get into?

The reason its admittance rate is so low, I’d imagine, is because sooo many kids in NYC are applying to 6 of these CUNY schools at a time since it is only one application (fee) and many people want one of these four year colleges instead of a CC. A LOT of kids are applying, hence why they have to turn down so many. Check the median SAT scores or whatever and that might give a better picture. Good luck!

Both CUNY’s and SUNY are very competitive. They are state run schools which may give you the impression that they are only a step up from a community college but in reality they are just as competitive as some private schools. The benefit of a SUNY is cost. To go to a SUNy is also ideal because of the small campus size. The SUnY I want to go to(cortland) has enrollment under 10k and a tuition under 5k. SUNY and CUNY have a low number of acceptance rate in my opinion because the state wants it’s elite. A lot of big campus schools have small student bodies. And that’s no the population at the CUnY/ SUNY system at all. 98% of the schools are filled with undergraduates looking to major in all differed fields, depending on what you want to do you might just consider attending a CUNY school for the full 4 years.

@Jazzi-
Thanks for the article, found it informative. Although, that article is essentially just saying that for such a cheap school…the education you get aint so bad. It does not compare CUNYs and SUNYs to a top school such as NYU.

I wonder if I would be just as favored when seeking top internships as a NYU, Columbia or Fordham student? Because internships, networking, and career connections is the top reason I want to go to school in Manhattan. I want to live and work in Manhattan after college and want to make sure I have built a solid foundation for myself on the path to success and not end up having to move out to the countryside or some middle of nowhere town after graduation just to afford an apartment and have a crappy job.

I would like some honest opinions on this please. With biases aside…honestly, (this questions is open to anyone) do you really think a Hunter student is as favored as say NYU when it comes to the top internships at radio stations like KTU, Z100 or television studios like FUSE TV or MTV studios?

Hunter average GPA is a 88 so people aren’t dumb or anything and they have a competitive honors program,
Baruch’s average GPA is 89 and the Avg SAt is 1220/1600, IMO it’s the best Cuny but it’s very business oriented

But they don’t compare to NYU obviously

If you qualify for NYU, I would look into macauly honors program at the CUNYs , you get free dorm, free laptop, free tuition and etc …

Hmmm. It seems Hunter does not offer Media Communications, Journalism or even Business!! Which are all the programs I am interested in. That is strange. For some reason I thought they did. Schools in NYC almost always have (if not ALWAYS) degrees for Business and Journalism as those are popular in the city. Maybe there I am missing something? Can someone shed some light on this? Do they really not offer those programs??? I cant believe I was seriously considering Hunter when they do not even offer the programs I am interested in. I could have sworn I read somewhere that they do…before I seriously consider a school I always check their list of majors first. Strange. Cant believe I missed that…

I am not sure, I would double check.
But baruch is super bussinessy, around 75 percent of the undergrads are in a bussiness related major, so check that school out
