Hi, I’m considering applying to the Huntsman program at UPenn while also completing my pre-med requirements. I want to work in global health in the future but I absolutely LOVE the Huntsman. Would it be possible to graduate from the Huntsman and then go to med school?
I think it would be quite difficult to fulfil pre-med requirements while on the Huntsman Program. Huntsman has loads of requirements, so I imagine it would be quite difficult to fit pre-med in as well.
1 semester is spent abroad.
Then there are all these requirements:
4 Advanced Language
3 Area Studies
3 International Business
3 International Studies
1 Senior Thesis
There are 7 School of Arts and Sciences General Requirements, although I guess quite a few would overlap with pre-med requirements. I imagine Society, History & Tradition, Arts & Letters, Humanities & Social Science Interdisciplinary and The Physical World wouldn’t though (could be wrong). So that’s another 5 requirements.
Then for Wharton there’s
3 General Education (Econ, Math and BEPP or another Econ)
Management 100
9 Wharton Fundamentals
4 Concentration Requirements
And to finish 1 Writing Requirement.
Note 40 courses are required for graduation.
@sansculottes thanks, I have a ton of AP and IB credits and I’m already near-fluent in my proposed Huntsman language, so I think I would be able to take most of my pre-med courses without any prereqs. I know UPenn is known for being strict on course selection/changes/whatever but I’m not sure if UPenn uses standardized testing for placement and credit and how that would affect the courses I have to take
At least one Huntsman student has gone on to medical school, but based on her linkedin profile it appears that she had to fulfill at least some of her premedical requirements after graduating from Penn:

You might try contacting her to get a sense of how feasible it is given your background.
Is the “Why Penn?” essay considered for Huntsman admission??
The “Why Penn” essay is not considered for Huntsman - it should be written about your 2nd choice school.
Also, I don’t think you’ll get as many credits as you might expect - you need 5’s for most AP credits and 6/7’s for IB Credit (Higher Level exams only). For more information, check out this link: http://www.admissions.upenn.edu/apply/freshman-admission/precollegecredit .
Also note that even though you may be waived out of a class, you may be required to take a higher level class to fulfill the requirement instead.
