I’m pretty sure this wasn’t already covered (I searched the forums) but if it was, my apologies. So I speak two languages besides English: Mandarin Chinese and Spanish.

I’ve taken 10+ years of Chinese School but all that “officially” amounts to only two years of Mandarin in high school. I speak it fluently without a “Westerner” accent (sorry if I offend anyone >.<) In fact my uncle in Taiwan thought I had the distinct Beijing accent. My reading and writing is not as good. I can write ok and read ok but its definitely not great.

As for Spanish, I’m in AP Spanish now and I started Spanish in Junior High. Only gotten a B+ once, the rest were all A’s. However I’d much rather study Mandarin in college than Spanish, no offense intended. How does UPenn decide if you’re “proficient” in the language? What language should I apply for? Thanks!

You need to take SAT II for the language you choose. If you don't score 700+ or even 750+, the chance is slim. Too many well qualified applicants including international or people who moved to the U.S. when they were young. Chinese language has one of the toughest competition.

OK..so I'm a little rusty on my Chinese. When do they want this SAT II score by? It's already too late to register for the Oct. 14 one (I'm taking the Math IIC then anyways).

You can actually chose to take Chinese on Oct. 14 because you're registered for the Math IIC test. Just take the test on that day, and it will be scored normally.

Unfortunately the chinese IS a listening test. i dont know what to tell you but i have heard of people who have been admitted with either subpar sat II scores or no SAT II scores at all. Obviously your chances are hurt but there's still a chance.
