Huntsman Program at UPenn

Could a parent care to explain what is the difference between a finacace major at Harvard or Yale versus a Huntsman Program (or Wharton degree) at UPenn. MY son admitted early to Yale and has a very good response from Harvard. But he could not apply early to Huntsman, he likes it and still looking for enough financial aid?

Is it trure that Wharton offers more courses like real state planning, stock investment etc.which are not normally covered by economics departments. In addition, for Huntsman program is language selection is the sole critrion. He comes from a top elite prep school. He has some high state or even national level awards in humanities and math and scince. However, his target language is Spansih and he will be just taking AP spanish. His foreign language is a probably not on very advance level. Thanks for the info.

Chinaman, I would recommend you to contact Bern700. He is attending Wharton and is very familiar with the Huntsman program. He would also be able to help you compare your son's Spanish level with the language requirements. You can do a search for his posts.

Here's his contact info:

thanks Xiggi:

Happy New Year.

Hi Chinaman,
From what I have heard (after sitting in on a Hunstman Info session and knowing an applicant quite well), the Huntsman program requires a student to be proficient in their target language. Students are tested on their language as part of the admissions criteria to Huntsman. They must also have taken the SATII in their target language (along with Math IIC). Did your son take the Spanish SATII?

Thanks. Yes he has a score of 780 or 790 in spanish SAT II(This one I am not sure).

But do you have any idea what is the major difference between ECO major in other school versus wharton? I know HUntsman is very tough to get inbut who knows.

I don't know what the others schools offer for ECON majors. Here are Huntsman's Economics courses...

ECON 020 Economic History and Development
ECON 023 Topics in Economic Development: India & China
ECON 050 International Economics
ECON 053 International Trade
ECON 054 International Monetary Economics
ECON 061 Economics of Eastern Europe
ECON 123 Topics in Development
ECON 150 International Economics
ECON 160 Comparative Economic Systems

This is what I've heard from my son who has a friend who is in Huntsman: Huntsman is an interdisciplinary program of International Relations and Economics. IR from the College of Arts and Sciences and Economics from Wharton.

hi chinaman! Well first of all yale and harvard don't have undergrad business so they don't study finance. Students there study economics. The huntsman program is a program in which you study some concentration in wharton and international studies in the college. Upon completion of the program you leave penn with a B.S. in Economics with a concentration in ______(you pick) and a B.A. in International Studies.

Huntsman students typically need really advanced math and language skills. If your son received a 780-790 he should be fine. Also a 750+ would be recommended in math IIC.

Personally, the people in know in huntsman turned down schools like harvard, yale, princeton, oxford for the program. I believe that it's a really attractive program because you graduate in 4 years not only with a B.A. from the college but with a B.S. from wharton which is gold in the business world. HYP are also gold in the business world but I think it would give you an edge in applying for prestigious ibanking jobs to have 2 degrees.

Wharton in an amazing school. Yes there are many courses not offered by econ dept at other schools. Econ dept at other school teach economics theory, they don't teach subjects like finance, management, accounting, real estate, marketing, operations information management, supply chain manangement, health systems, etc. Recruiting-wise I think that wharton students have an advantage over econ students at other schools because wharton is known for taking students and turning them into finance machines. When I worked at an Ibank this summer I saw a list of people recently hired and of the 120 or so people 20 where from wharton, the next closest school, harvard, had 8 people.

I've really enjoyed my experience at wharton...I've already gone to Citigroup headquarters in NY for two functions (at one it was MBA students from Wharton, Harvard, Yale, NYU, Columbia, and Northwestern, and Wharton UNDERGRADS we were the only UG there), i've been taken out for dinner by 3 fortune 500 recruiters, 2 ibanks, and I've gone for drinks with goldman sachs recruiters who were former wharton students. I've gone to dinner at Warren Buffet's house, and have met at least 15 CEOs. AND I'M ONLY A FRESHMAN!

NO OTHER UNDERGRAD PROGRAM offers such a well rounded business education. The Huntsman program is amazing. Personally, I think your son can't go wrong where ever he ends up but if he gets into huntsman he should give it some serious thought.

Good luck to your son!!!!

Thanks a lot for your helpful information. Yes he has 800 in Math IIC (and rest of SATII in except language). Bern, now I understand why my son is so looking forward to apply to Wharton as well Huntsman Program. He wanted to apply early but for financial aid reasons, he could not do so. Last year, he told me that if decent finanicail aid comes through, UPenn will be his first choice. Thanks for your help. Let us see if he get an admission in school. Thanks and have a happy new year :)
