Huntsman Target Language Dilemma

Hi! Prospective Huntsman ED applicant here.

I’m having trouble deciding which language to indicate as my target language–Korean vs. Chinese.
I spent 8 years living in China (ages 2 to 10), so I have native proficiency in the language. However, since I haven’t taken any advanced courses in Chinese, I’m not familiar with more academic terms. I got a 5 on the AP Chinese exam.
As for Korean, I studied abroad in South Korea for 6 weeks on a State Department scholarship (NSLI-Y) in addition to some self studying. I received an Intermediate-Mid rating on my oral proficiency exam, which I intend to use in the application.

My concerns:
-Chinese can be considered as my native language, and Huntsman prefers applicants to not indicate their native language as the target language
-I’m not sure if my OPI score for Korean is sufficient for application standards
—I am willing to take the SAT subject test and rush the score to meet the ED deadline, but it will probably require more studying on my part
-It might be more advantageous to choose Korean as there are fewer applicants (correct me if I’m wrong)
-My target language choice will impact my essay

Overall, I will study both languages in college regardless of my target language choice. I am very interested in the East Asian area and intend to pursue a career (either in foreign service or business) that involves interactions with that area. Any opinion/info is greatly appreciated!

I would guess Korean would be better (given that you are a native Chinese speaker), as long as you are at the point where you could develop proficiency by the time you study abroad in junior year. I suggest you email or call with your question, emphasizing that you intend to study both languages, and see what they recommend. Good luck!

Thank you very much!
