Huntsman vs. Other options...

I am super excited and honored to have been admitted to UPenn's Huntsman program 2015!!!! It's an amazing program, and I would love love love to be in it.

That being said, I got 0 FA. My EFC is 55k which means I'm not loaded, but I still don't get any help.

Other options I'm throwing around are:

Georgetown SFS
(although, this one is pretty much off the list because if I pay full amount somewhere, I think I would pick Huntsman)

Notre Dame
(my lifetime dream school, Honors program, about 20,000 in scholarship)

Washington and Lee
(FULL RIDE, I like it, but I'm not sure its size and location fit with my academic goals.)

I am interested in politics, IR, law, business, peace/poverty studies, etc...

If anyone has any opinions, I would love advice or information that might be useful in deciding!!! Thank you :)

It’s a little hard to give advice when I know nothing about ND, but a few things…

First of all, what’s your target language? (ok, that doesn’t have much bearing on anything, but I’m curious)

Second, I saw on a different thread that you’re interested in Foreign Service, which is awesome, because I’m also interested in Foreign Service (oh, btw, I am only in Wharton, but I have been in Japanese class with Huntsman kids my entire time at Penn and have several Huntsman friends). Just so you know, none of the Huntsman kids I know are interested in Foreign Service. That’s not to say they don’t exist, but the normal ‘business route’ is definitely more common. I think a lot of people just don’t know about Foreign Service in the first place (I don’t think I did until…last year, probably). If you decide to spend a summer interning in DC, you’ll probably be able to participate in Penn in Washington and attend a lunch at the State Department with several FSOs–I did that last summer and it really made me want to do FS. In terms of your interests, Penn has tons of classes that fit into those categories. Wharton even has a legal studies department that addresses a lot…I think there’s a ‘law in emerging markets’ class or something like that…there are just a lot of options.

The Huntsman program has special travel/study/something grants that you can apply for to use to study abroad the summer after your freshman (and probably sophomore?) year, which you might find helpful. I also don’t know much about this topic since I’m not actually in Huntsman, so you should ask Inge (or a current student) about it. This can be helpful if money is an issue.

You also will live on a floor with all the other Huntsman freshmen, which will let you have a really diverse, international feel to your freshman year. You also have your own little building across from Huntsman Hall (the main building most Wharton classes are in). Everyone in Huntsman seems pretty tight.

Basically, I recommend finding current students to talk to, which you should be able to do through the facebook group or Inge or…yeah. I can also probably connect you myself.
You also should visit both campuses if you haven’t already, and make a list of what you want out of your undergrad experience and how ND and Penn compare. Honestly, Penn vs. ND shouldn’t make a difference for getting into the Foreign Service, as far as I’m aware.

Also…if you do decide to come to Penn, I’ll actually be one of your RAs. Just thought I’d throw that in there =D Let me know if you have any more specific questions. This reply is just really all over the place and probably pretty incoherent.
