Hurricane and Move-In/Orientation

Anyone else going to have a bit of a difficult first week at Wesleyan due to the Hurricane?

We are (although hopefuly all will end well!); and we are worried about my son's roomate who is an International student (he was supposed to move in on Sunday!)

For us, we were originally planning to fly into JFK late on Sunday night, visit with my parents in NY Monday, and get to Connecticult late Monday (we are coming from the West Coast). We worried the Sunday night flight was going to be a no-go...so we also scheduled a refundable back-up flight on Saturday early. Ha. BOTH flights were canceled this afternoon. SO...we tried to book a back up combo of flights to get us anywhere CLOSE on Monday...(we really need Tuesday to get all the dorm stuff!). The BEST United could do for us was a combo of flights on two airlines...first to Denver, then to Pittsburgh, then finally to Hartford. And we are "elite" fliers, so they were REALLY trying hard to accomodate us! We did look at Tuesday but it was no better, got us in around 11pm at best, and we were worried we wouldn't have that 1 extra day in case of missing a flight connection (move in is on Wednesday and orientation starts then too).

A Hurricane was definitely not part of my family's plans this week! Hope everyone who needs rebooked flights are successful, and I hope that things won't be as bad as predicted.

I am sure your sons roommate will be fine. Wes is usually very very good and accommodating to international students. If he is in transit, Landing in ny, Boston or Hartford, will be tough, but if he makes it to wes, the administration will find a spot for them. There are plans to move to secure housing for the students there already, if necessary, and there are quite a few.

I know this is not ideal, but they are now calling this the storm of a lifetime. Have you thought of ordering the dorm supplies online so you just have to pick it up, that could be a real timesaver. The good news, if there is any, (and unfortunately I am in the middle of it and on the ct coast) is that hopefully the storm will be over on sunday evening. Now if we just have electricity.

Pm men if there is any way I can help.

Sorry to hear about all your hassles with United. We are flying Southwest to Hartford from the West Coast tomorrow morning and it seems there will be no problems. Irene is cooperating by not coming into CT until about 10-12 hours after we get in, but the question for us is will power be out and if so, for how long? Various forecasters are talking about the saturation of the lands that has already occurred due to storms earlier in the week, and the 4-6 inches projected for CT on Sunday could lead to trees being uprooted and havoc with public safety on the roads. The upside is that starting Monday, the sun will be out and it will stay that way at least through Thursday. I pity the families whose kids are going to be coming in to colleges in the NC and Mid-Atlantic area which seem to be the areas getting the biggest brunt of this storm. Don’t buy all the media hype though–read the updated National Weather Service forecasts and see for yourself what objective scientists who do not have the commercial pressures of the big cable TV channels for whom this is the crisis of the moment. Stay calm, respect the power of nature and I will hope that everybody on the east coast comes through this with the least pain and disruption possible.
