Ireland and northern Scotland are about to be hit by hurricane Ophelia, which is the strongest hurricane to ever form in the eastern Atlantic.
I feel absurdly guilty, like it should be hitting us somewhere instead. Maybe that’s Ophelia talking…
Almost 2 years ago, I visited Ireland in mid December, just after they had been hit by storm Desmond. Ireland gets hit every winter by named storms that originate off the coast of Newfoundland and drift across the Atlantic. But Desmond was far worse than usual. More rain fell in county Clare and county Galway than had been seen in 20+ years and Desmond went on to wreck ancient stone bridges in Scotland.
We spend time shrieking as we drove through deep puddles in our tiny little Skoda and twice the puddles were so deep that my feet got wet - inside the car!
Crossing my fingers that Ophelia is not too bad.
