NYU, Monday classes are cancelled, has not cancelled classes for Tuesday, yet. We shall see. Everyone stay safe. Prayers and wishes for all our children away from home

Conn Coll, overlooking Long Island Sound and the Thames River, on Sunday, cancelled classes at least until Wednesday. We live an hour away and were thinking about picking up our daughter. But we’re also in the storm path, and given that Conn has emergency generators, and we don’t, we were thinking it should be us staying with her. (Only joking, we told her.)

Bucknell just cancelled classes from 2 pm on Monday until noon on Tuesday.

Barnard has closed for tomorrow now also. Columbia hasn’t posted on their website that they’ll be closed tomorrow.

Lafayette College just updated this - All classes will be cancelled tomorrow (Tuesday, Oct. 30).

University of Southern Maine is closing at 4 pm today. My son is happy because it means a math test scheduled for Wednesday has been pushed back to next Monday.

RPI near Albany closed at noon and they say non-essential employees are released until further notice. Sounds like they may be out a couple of days.

NYU is closed for Tuesday as well.

Does anyone think this is nuts? I would feel like an idiot now if I had cancelled Monday classes at a residential campus anywhere north of NJ or west of Philadelphia, unless maybe your college is on the beach. I am in Philadelphia, and nothing has happened today that is anything worse than a steady rain. There’s some wind, but nothing scary yet. I am not saying that this will not be a serious storm, but for days the predictions have been that, for us at least, it would be a serious storm starting tonight, not starting last night. I can’t imagine what they are thinking at Dickinson, which is over 100 miles west of here (i.e., further away from the storm).

There has been some storm surge and flooding in CT and RI, so I can see those places closing schools.

JHS…actually canceling was a better safe than sorry thing to do. While the students live on campus, many of the college employees do not. In CT no one was supposed to be on the highways after 1 pm today. Many folks live a goodly distance from the universities. No…the worst hasn’t happened…yet…but without a crystal ball it would have been impossible to know the conditions this morning. This storm is moving slowly…I think more slowly than originally predicted.

In fact, for the past several hours the storm has been moving much faster than projected. For days, it had been projected to make landfall after midnight tonight, but I understand that it’s coming ashore right now.

Just got a text from S. Power is out at Lafayette (Easton, PA) and power lines are exploding. As we drove back to Pittsburgh yesterday from F amily Weekend, there was a nearly constant parade of power and tree removal trucks heading eastbound. Of course, they can’t really do much until the heavy rain and wind slow down.

D lives in S. Bethlehem so lotsofquests, glad to hear how things are going in her neck of the woods. She’s out of college and had to go to work today. I sent a couple of texts but no response. I’m thinking they might not be getting to her.

S is in Pittsburgh. He said he’s getting a lot of rain but otherwise doing ok.

Given the predictions and the uncertainty, I think the closures are wise. I’m surprised it hasn’t been that bad in Philly-- we are much further from the storm and high winds and heavy rain, power outages, trees down etc., all day. Far better safe than sorry-- a few miles change of course and Philly or New York or New Haven could be inundated like Atlantic City is now. Don’t fool around with mother nature!

I think the list tomorrow for VA includes George Mason, CNU, ODU, and UVA… W&M remains open, so far.

^ Yeah, I don’t think we’ll close tomorrow unless the power goes out during the night.

Got a message from D, at 7 am my time-Mumbai, and 9:30 PM her time-NY, “Power Cut, No Water”. All’s well but not happy being holed inside the dorm for past 2 days now. But better safe than sorry.

Just heard from Lafayette S: no power or internet in his building, wreckage everywhere but storm seems to have passed. He is “camping out” in a building with a generator trying to write a paper.

My S at Lafayette has wi-fi, no power but lucky enough to have hot showers in his building. They can charge their computers and phones in a 3 places on campus.
