Our 12th grade daughter has applied to two state univ., and USC (Univ. of Southern Calif.) She plans on majoring in broadcast journalism. Applications were done and sent in months ago, and now our financial situation has changed significantly. My husband was just diagnosed with a high-grade, malignant bone cancer (rare in adults), and is facing three months of aggressive chemo, then surgery on the femur. We've been working on filling out the Fasfa form, which will reflect earnings from 2006, which will not sync up now with how 2007 is shaping up. Should we notify the admissions departments, so they consider this turn of events in their financial aid decisions? Does the fasfa allow commentary for something like this? We are rapidly acquiring piles of sobering medical documents and can certainly provide verification. Thank you for any advice.

Yes, definitely do update them on such a significant change to your family financial situation. Best wishes.

I would wait until she is accepted and you have a financial aid offer in hand. Then you petition for a review or appeal, providing colleges with the new information. To do so before admittance and before actual package in hand may not work. HOWEVER - contact the FA office at the college and ask them, then let us know how it goes. My condolences for your husband's cancer and the upheaval and trauma you are all going through, and best wishes for his full recovery.

momofteen,
I PM'ed you.

Very sorry to hear this. I second the idea of calling the financial aid office. Best of luck.
