I ran the UNL NPC last night for my son and it said he could be eligible for a Beadle Scholarship and a Husker Heritage Scholarship which combined for a pretty big amount.
So i looked for more information and found the info on the Beadle scholarship easily, but could not find any information about the Husker Heritage Scholarship anywhere on the UNL website.
it was confusing to me because the name would suggest it is for dependents of past UNL alumni but no one in my family has ever gone to UNL.
so, what is this Husker Heritage Scholarship? is this something new? i just find it odd that the NPC would list this big award but then there is no information about it whatsoever on the website.
Maybe it’s the Native American Heritage Scholarship? On the UNL website under scholarships it is listed there. Says it ranges from $2,000 to full direct cost of attendance. Otherwise, contact them directly. My daughter goes to UNL and every time I’ve had a question about anything I have found them to be helpful and friendly.
@Wien2NC My daughter also received the Husker Heritage Scholarship, but we have no relatives who have attended UN-L. I’m curious to know what you found out about the scholarship.
UPDATE:
looks like it was added to the website recently. it says:
“This scholarship is awarded to outstanding first-year college students with a high academic potential.”
so the George Beadle & Husker Heritage Scholarships basically cover full OOS tuition. that would leave us with just fees, room. board, and books. interesting. i wonder if he might be eligible for additional scholarships too.
The GB + HH may cover the full cost of tuition, if the ACT is high enough. The HH appears to come in two levels.
Playing around with the OOS Scholarship Estimator, I found:
24/3.0: Ruth Leverton and Scarlet Scholarships - $13K (not too shabby for a 24 ACT/B student!)
29/3.0: George Beadle Scholarship - $14.5K
32/3.5: Husker Heritage - $5K on top of GB
34/3.5: HH - $7K on top of GB
So, the GB + HH do cover full OOS tuition if the ACT is 34+. If the ACT is 32-33, they will be about $2K short.
One thing to note: the HH requires a cumulative 3.5 GPA to maintain the scholarship. I did not see that with the GB.
Scrolling down to the Husker Heritage and clicking on “How to Apply” results in this:
1.Apply for Admission.
2.Take the ACT or SAT on or before the December national test dates of senior year.
3.Submit admission materials by January 15.
This scholarship is renewable up to four years as long as a cumulative GPA of 3.5 is maintained, 24 credit hours are completed each academic year and a minimum of nine graded hours (not pass/no pass) are completed each semester.
@sdteak
Was that postal mail, and how long after her acceptance letter?
My son’s MyRED account lists the George Beadle and the Husker Heritage under Financial Aid -> Offered Awards. There is a link to an online version of the George Beadle letter, but nothing for the Husker Heritage. And nothing in the mailbox for either.
Are both of these automatic based on ACT/GPA? The estimator said that he may qualify for these, so I wasn’t sure. His account says “Offered Awards,” so I am assuming that he qualifies, but I would like to see confirmation.
I was curious about the history of the Husker Heritage award. I found posts about the George Beadle going back a number of years, but almost nothing on the Husker Heritage. I asked at a local Husker event for admitted students and was told that the HH is new for 2016-2017.
I think that they are trying to increase their academic standing and want to attract high-potential OOS students to help them get there.
I am a bit concerned about the discussion of state budget issues and how it might affect cost. Nothing has been finalized, but there has been discussion about two years of double-digit tuition increases.
Having already received our FA letter, is this year safe? I know that the letter is an estimate, but I would hope that any changes at this point would be fairly minor and not a 10% increase.
If it does affect this year, would the school let people know before May 1? It would be nice to know this before we are committed.
I also wonder how they would implement these increases, if it does happen. If everyone’s tuition goes up by 10%, it would be the HH recipients whose net COA would rise by the greatest percentage.
