Hi all! I am curious about the caliber of the Hutton Honors College. My daughter has been admitted there. Can anyone comment on their experiences there? Thank you in advance for your help.
The Hutton Honors College is a decent perk to take advantage of if your daughter attends IU, but it really doesn’t do that much in the grand scheme of things. Being in Hutton allows you to take any honors class at IU. Some of the classes are useful and some aren’t. It’s nice to have the scheduling flexibility when you are an underclassman, but pretty much all benefits end when you become a junior because there aren’t honors options for upper-level required classes (at least in Kelley). I took several honors classes and had a good overall experience with Hutton classes. That said, I don’t think Hutton should make or break the decision to go to IU. These threads are also somewhat helpful:

This might not make a ton of sense, so feel free to ask if you have more specific questions. I’m a current junior and took the required classes to get the honors notation (link below) because I had extra space in my schedule, and I would have taken most of these classes anyway. The notation isn’t required and nobody probably will ever care if you get it. I enjoyed most of the classes though.
@iubaccounting so did you think it was worth it? My D who is a Freshman just received a notice that due to her first semester grades she is eligible to apply for the Hutton Honors College. She was going to talk to her adviser about it. Not sure what she gains be being part of the program as an Education major so trying to figure out if its a good idea to apply.
My junior daughter joined Hutton as a freshman and she liked it. She took the 2 required honors classes for her A&H requirements for her major. She really enjoyed the classes and the small size. Looks great on her resume - I feel it’s worth it. You don’t have to get the honors notation if you don’t want to.
@dcolosi If the school of education doesn’t have honors classes, it’s probably not worth the effort to apply because you’d be missing out on the only benefit. I have no idea if it does or not, but being able to take honors business classes was the reason why it benefitted me.
Thanks, I really didn’t see an education classes on the honors list, a few English and Lit but not sure any that would really appeal to her. She is going to talk to her adviser about it to see what she feels.
@bobbity111 I believe there is an honors designation on their diploma if she maintains the GPA requirement. The perks come via the SSA scholarship application as there are some very prestigious scholarships such as the Wells Scholars, Herbert Presidential Scholars, Hudson and Holland Scholars. These students basically get the red carpet rolled out for them. There are invited luncheons, dinners, and special meetings with university dignitaries. My daughter is a Herbert Scholar.
You can still fill out the SSA without being in Hutton. It’s possible to get a Hutton scholarship, but that’s the only scholarship that has anything to do with being in Hutton
