Hello all,
I have recently been invited to join/take classes at the Hutton Honors College. Does anyone have any knowledge on Hutton, and whether or not the opportunity is worth it?

My daughter is in the Hutton Honors College and while it has only been about 6 weeks, we only see advantages. She received an additional scholarship through HH, she has a student mentor through HH, special advising, can participate in activities specifically for HH, etc. On another thread you said you plan to major in finance. She is a finance major, and is taking one of the Kelley requirements as an honors class this semester (K204 - The Computer in Business) and so far it is not a struggle at all. If you look at grade distributions for honors classes, you will see a much higher percentage of A’s. Other advantages are smaller classes, HH study abroad scholarships and research grants, group projects with engaged students, etc. I assume it also looks good when applying for the Business Honors program. The requirements are not demanding - you don’t even have to take an honors class every semester. I see no downside!

Ditto! There is no downside. It opens lots of possibilities that would otherwise not be available to you.

If you are in the Hutton Honors College do you get priority time slots for registering for classes each semester? If not, how are class registration dates determined?

racquetdad …Honors students dont get priority registration. Registration dates are determined by how many credits a student has

Hmm, my daughter is a freshman Hutton Honors student and she said honors students do get priority registration.

^^ But I think she may be wrong…

I really hope your daughter is right

I believe registration times are based on how many credits a student has. However, the benefit a Hutton student could see is that certain sections of classes are restricted to Hutton students. Same applies to DAs.

Some honor classes have part of the section reserved for Hutton freshmen. But, after the freshman year, how many credits you got will determine how early you can register. AP credits help too. It is reasonably fair. Nonetheless, it is still a torture watching the classes with the best professors filling up day by day. At some other schools, one may have to wait for a semester or a year.

Well, as I suspected, my daughter was wrong. As others have mentioned, honors students do not get priority registration, it is based on credit hours. But honors students do have the advantage of having access to honors-only sections of certain classes.

JohnWall11, how did you find out that you were invited to be in HHC? According to the website, my daughter meets all the criteria. Her admission letter said nothing, and her personal website didn’t either. I’m extremely confused by all of this.

jocjarmom…I was in the same boat so I called the Honors College and they told me I had been accepted and should have received a letter. They are sending me a new letter…you might want to call

jocjarmom, my D went through this process in late September. First she received the IU acceptance letter. The Hutton Honors College letter came separately after that, as well as the merit scholarship letter and Kelley direct admit letter. So they are all separate letters- be patient.

Thank you bigbooklover, I will make that call today!

racquetdad, was the merit scholarship one of those Automatic Academic Scholarships they used to have? Or was it one of those SSA Scholarships you are “invited” to apply for?

jocjarmom…I received acceptance then scholarship similar to the ones that they used to have…still waiting to hear about SSA scholarships

My son has received acceptance email and letter, and emails about Kelley and Honors. Seems like it was about a week between email and letter for admit.

Thanks bigbooklover, I guess there’s still a chance she’ll get a scholarship and offer for HHC too.
