Hey I have a question for all those CC buffs out there. I'm a senior accepted to georgetown u class of 2011. Once I got into gtown I decided not to apply anywhere else. While I'm completely exstatic to go to gtown next year, I can't help but feel a little bit of buyers remorse--bc I think I would have had a decent shot at any of the ivies. While I'm pretty sure I'll be more happy at gtown than I would at HYP, I know the latter are of course more prestigious. So my question is--does it matter? Is there really that much difference in prestige? If I work hard and do well at GU would I have relatively the same appeal to grad schools/future employers than if I went to an ivy?

of ocurse theres a difference...they dont have an acronym for nothing

You're going to a GREAT school with an Ivy-reputation (among the general populace and more importantly among employers, etc.). Don't worry about these things. Don't look back! Congrats.

Edit: Lol at the post above me. So great haha

haha WOOT i was hoping someone would laugh at that...

Don't worry, the "prestige" syndrome is common here. Georgetown isn't quite as well known as Harvard, Yale, or Princeton, but still very prestigious. You chose well. =)

georgetown is an awesome school, and im impressed when people tell me they go/went there ;). what are you planning to study?

I'm impressed that you got into Georgetown! Don't have buyer's remorse.. you got into a great university! :D

That's a really awesome university. Congrats!

Thanks all, this is of course reassuring. Aube--I think international business or "political economy". I'm not too sure tho

Keep in mind that HYP had RD admit rates of ~5-6% last year, and this year promises to be even more competitive. Of course, taking out the athletic recruits and other hooked applicants brings down the admit rate some. Think you would've been up for a 2-3% shot? ;) You made a great choice.

"I'm pretty sure I'll be more happy at Georgetown than I would at HYP..."

That's all that matters.

Gee, Bill Clinton went to Georgetown. And from there he went on to being a Rhodes scholar and a Yale Law School admit. I'd say he did well for himself coming from Georgetown.

Someone I know personally went to Georgetown undergraduate, NYU law school and now works for one of the big prestigous law firms in DC.

You will be able to achieve your goals with a Georgetown degree.

Yeah, at Georetown you're at a college that is better than like 99.6% of the other colleges in the world, so I wouldn't sweat the prestige factor.

Hey, Georgetown is a great place to be. Now look at you... you can party all night long, slack off in school, while laughing at the Ivy league applicants lose 15 pounds and maintaining a diet of pure chocolate because of the stress. (Psychologists probably make a lot of money at this time :) )

Georgetown would never lower itself to Ivy League level and cut its difficult five course per semester course load. If you want to slack there are Ivy schools where you can graduate with as little as 30 courses over four years. What you will get in the classroom at Georgetown will be every bit as "complete" and rigorous as any Ivy. I went to an Ivy League grad school in one of its top-5 professional programs and can attest to this from real life experience.

"i think international business or "political economy"

in that case, gtown is especially great

but either way, adofficer is right :)

Doesn't matter.

The fact that you will be happy at the college of your choice is the best predictor of your future. If you want the more competitive opportunities that will be available after undergrad, do well in the school of your choice, get out there and make friends and learn to network effectively with professors, mentors, local businesses , etc....

if ur going into anything related to politics or internation relations you really cant beat gtown simply b/c of the location...the internship oppurtunities are endless

And going to an Ivy can actually be a liability in politics in some circles.

well, you can always transfer if you don't like it there
